so like, ten years ago I found Pandora Hearts on YouTube. I watched one or two episodes, enjoyed it, then for some reason never kept watching it, and it's been haunting me since. So today I've finally decided to remedy this and read the manga.
For now I've only read 8 chapters, but my current theory is;
Alice was born of the Vessalius House; at 15, she made a contract with a Chain to change the past so she was never born. But by doing this, she stopped existing, and so couldn't make her contract, which led to a paradox, bim bam time bullshitery, that's what created the Abyss. And because the Abyss existed from her will to have never been born, the Will of the Abyss looks like her, and she exists in it with no memories.
For one reason or the other, it so happens that the universe cannot work if she's truly fully gone from it; so, when Alice was supposed to be born, instead, someone who couldn't be her was born. A boy, named Oz.
The two are essentially the same person but not at all. They fulfill the same role in their universe, they are linked in a unique way that makes it feel like they already met, like the other is special. Some kind of ultimate soulmate shit. Yin and yang, two sides of the same coins, things like that. And that's also why Oz is special, he's linked to the origin of the Abyss.
I kind of want to go even further and claim it's a cycle. When Alice was the one who was born, the Will looked like Oz, and the rabbit (or other thematically relevant Alice in Wonderland character) was Oz. And they essentially switched places, and before that, it was Oz who wished to have never been born and switched places with Alice, and so on. A whole timeloop cycle thingie, which for some reasons, was broken this time around (my heart wants to say it's Gill's presence who broke the cycle. like he was never there in the times before, but for some reasons, he was introduced to Oz in this life, and it broke them away from the cycle. his loyalty shtick feels like it would be greatly rewarded with that).
