       green  hues  roll  at  him  playfully  upon  hearing  his  words.   if  she  had  a  camera  on  her  like  that  down  kid  did,  she’d  take  a  picture.   jeff  atkins  wore  happiness  well;  it  was  the  best  look  on  him,  and  her  favorite,  too.   ❛    please,  you  could  swing  that  bat  and  hit  all  those  balls  even  with  your  eyes  closed.    ❜   figure  presses  against  the  metal  barrier  as  she  says,   ❛    i’ll  watch  all  your  games  when  you’re  big  and  famous,  atkins  ——  and  i  am  going  to  make  it  up  to  you,  i  promise.    ❜   her  hands  snake  around  his  neck  and  she  angles  her  face  towards  his,  close  enough  to  kiss  him  if  she  stood  on  her  toes,  but  ——   ❛    you’re  gonna  have  to  hit  the  showers  first,  though.    ❜

her words freeze his actions,    a moment of silence on his behalf.    his brain is turning the words over and over,  analyzing what she could mean.   there’s something about the tone of her voice that made him focus on what she was saying.    it could have just been a coincidence,   right?     she never falls in love could be about anyone in the world.     and yet jeff couldn’t help but feel like it could be applied to her,   too.      was she afraid she’d get hurt?  afraid she’d hurt someone else?    afraid no one would fall in love with her?    -    or was he just overthinking it?

he finds the corner of his lips reaching to form a soft smile,   eyes softening to match the expression on his face.  they don’t talk much   -   especially if clay isn’t around.    but he would be blind if he couldn’t see that hannah was a sweet girl.    it wasn’t like he didn’t want to talk to her,   either   ;   she was a lot smarter than his friends   -   maybe even smarter than clay in a way.     hannah was like him    -   or at least he thought she was   :    painfully aware of other people and their feelings  but  coming short for her own.

“falling makes it sound painful,   doesn’t it?”   he wonders,   hiking his bag strap over his shoulder as he tilts his head to look down at her.    “like….when you’re a kid and you fall,    you always get back up with all those bruises and cuts.    so you try not to fall again.”      he doesn’t know if this makes sense,    but he’s trying his best.   it’s a lot harder than he thought.      “but if you sky-dive or bungee-jump,   that’s all you’re doing   ;   falling.    and it isn’t bad.  you get that thrill of adrenaline and satisfaction when you’ve finally done it.”
