amazing double dance by hao ruoqi ( in blue)and wang xuerou(in red)
OH MY GOD OH MY GOOOOD A FEW THINGS ABOUT THIS:
the facial expressions
the effortless sensuality
I AM SO GAY
the inexplicable moment in which the dynamic between the two shifted like they changed bodies
did china allow this to be shown? china?
DID I MENTION THE GAY
what is the lore of this? I figured that it was a malevolent spirit shifting from one body to another
the part with the leg. you know which one I mean
seriously are they actresses cause this level of portrayal is more astounding than any Hollywood actress has ever amounted to
the end with the smile and the head grab and the beating heart
O H M Y G O D
For those wondering, the dance is based on a soul-switching scene from the movie Painted Skin II: The ResurrectionĀ and the music is Su Yunyingās Moment.
OH MY GOD OH MY GOD OH MY GOD!!!!!!
Medieval fantasy settings where men respect women enough to let them be knights and kill werewolves and shit but still open doors and pull out their seats for them and whatnot thatās some quality content right there.
āWhat ho, my dearest princess, allow me to assist thee onto thine horse!ā
āMany thanks, my most gracious knight, for thine assistance! I shall think fondly of thee as I plunge my blade into the gullet of this most foul worm!ā
āGodspeed, my lady, may thy sword strike true!ā
Basically itās like, woman goes on grueling quest alone or enters dangerous career because she genuinely wants to? Cool, cool, very cool.
Woman is inconvenienced and annoyedĀ by minor circumstance she doesnāt want?!? Unacceptable, she must be assisted immediately.
People talk a lot about how reading is necessary for writing, but when you really want to improve your writing, itās important to go beyond just simple reading. Here are some things to do when reading:
Note how they begin and end the story. There are a ton of rather contradictory pieces of advice about starting stories, so see how they do it in the stories you enjoy. Donāt only look at the most popular stories, but look at your more obscure favorites.
See what strikes you.Ā Is it fast or complicated scenes with a lot of emotions? Is it stark lines? Pithy dialogue? What do you remember the next day?
Pay attention to different styles. Itās not just whether they use past or present tense, first or third person. Itās whether the writing is more neutral or deeper inside characterās heads. Do they use italics? Parentheses? Other interesting stylistic choices? Take the ones you like and try them out in your own writing. See what works and what doesnāt.
Keep track of how they deal with other characters.Ā Do we see a lot of secondary character each for very brief periods of time or are there a couple that show up a lot? How much information do we get about secondary characters? Do they have their own plots or do their plots revolve entirely around the main characters?Ā
Count how many plots there are. Is there just one main plot or are there multiple subplots? Are the storylines mostly plot-based or character-based?Ā Ā
Pay attention to what you donāt like. If you donāt like whatās going on in a book or even just a scene, note what it is. Does the dialogue feel awkward? Are the characters inconsistent? Does the plot feel too convenient or cobbled together? Does the wording just feel off? See if you can spot those issues in your own writing, especially when reading a completed draft or beginning a later draft.
(Great advice! I wanted to tack on other things I look for when reading)
Pay attention to how they introduce characters. Very rarely will it be all at once, and I guarantee the author went over the intro of each major character again and again while editing, so I always like paying extra close attention! Did the intro endear you to the character? Make you dislike them? How did the author impart that emotion?
Note instances of worldbuilding/info dumps, especially parts that donāt seem like worldbuilding/info dumps. Maybe the character mentions something offhand about a location youāll see five chapters later. Maybe the internal dialogue makes a comparison to the characterās childhood. Was the information effective or did it leave you wanting more? Make note of anything that made you go, āooh, neat!ā
After you finish the story, try to find foreshadowing that you missed the first time through! It can be as simple as skimming and looking for phrases you know are important after finishing the story. Most authors add foreshadowing in the editing stage, so I tend to ponder how the story would read before they added it. Ninety-nine percent of the time, the story seems more magical for it and itās just nice to appreciate.
What plot structures could the story fit into? We all know about the three arc stories, heroās journey, etc. Sometimes stories can fit into more than one category. During the read and after, keep it in the back of your mind. Can you predict where the climax of the story will hit? Is it man v man or man v nature? Does the predictability (or lack thereof) add to or take away from the story?

bit messy but Hey
how what???
Iām not good with the science of this or anything (someone who knows more feel free to add) but fish can play??? Fish can play like any other animal?? People saying it couldnāt breathe, do human kids not hold their breaths to go under water for fun? Itās just the opposite. Air is water, water is air. In the same vein as a kid being thrown up and into the pool and enjoying it, the fish is playing.
okay⦠as someone who studies marine biology I need to clarify something:
fish are unable to hold their breaths. They literally cannot take a deep breath like mammals do.
We have lungs that can take in a specific volume of air, fish have gills that work when they are ventilated enough. There are different kinds of gills, yes. Some fish have something calledĀ āoperculumā which is like a cap on top of the gills, helping to protect them and increasing the water circulation through the gills. Some fish DONT have this structure and need to swim in order to be able to breathe.
But the fact that they cannot hold their breaths doesnt mean that they cannot survive without water for a while - in fact, fish can (usually) survive being without water WAY LONGER than we could survive being without air.
I cannot tell if this fish does this for fun, but it sure looks like it. But I am not a behavioural biologist, so I canāt tell for sure.
It is abundantly clear the fish is a willing participant. Itās sort of arrogant to assume animals other than humans donāt play like humans.
Im not a behavior biologist either, but I have spent a lot of time around fish and ive spent a lot of time talking to and helping people that care for fish. (Former petstore fish guy that took his job too seriously)
That fish is having fun, and fish absolutely DO have fun!
There was a regular who came into the store I worked at a lot, and he kept several varieties of chichlids, a very smart, aggressive type of fish.
He would come in and talk to me about all the drama his fish get into. The different territorial disputes they were having, who had paired off with who, who broke up (yes chichlids are like this)
But he had a jack dempsey in particular that LOVED to chase his hand around the tank, not his wifeās hand, not his friendās hand, it HAD to be him. He said that as soon as he entered the room where this fishās tank was kept, the fish would TEAR UP the tank decor, knocking things over and acting a fool off his shits until this dude stuck his hand in there and let the fish chase it around back and forth.
He theorized that his fish learned that if he knocked the tank decor around, his owner would obviously have to stick his hand in to fix it. So when he wants to play āchase dadās handā thats naturally how he knows he can get the hand to appear. He wont do this behavior for anybody but this one guy and he wonāt tear up the tank anymore after he had received sufficient āplay timeā, usually once a day when the guy got home from work. He likened it to having a dog that wont leave you alone till you play tug o war for a bit.
I had a betta that would spend twenty minutes at a time just swimming up to the waterfall of the filter, letting it push him down to the bottom of the tank, only to swim back up and do it again, like it was a fucking slide.
Bettas are weak swimmers, and they dislike strong currents, but this guy was using the filter current like a slide. Kinda like how we donāt really like getting thrown around, but we still enjoy rollercoasters.
I also have countless stories about goldfish trying to āgive hugsā (re: shove themselves into their owners hands during tank maintenance)
My betta knows how to lie and he will only beg for food in front of those he knows have not fed him yet.
There is so much evidence Iāve seen that fish are waaaay smarter and affectionate than we think. They absolutely have fun and I honestly donāt think enough studies have been done on fish brains and fish behavior in general.
And honestly, having worked in a pet store, fish are generally treated like they donāt have brains by even the fish care brands that claim expert knowledge.
Its definitely worth noting that hard scientific evidence presenting that the very opposite is true would probably lead to more robust animal welfare laws that would definitely upset the aquatics industry. Food for thought.
I think youāre absolutely right on that last point. The misconception that fish are too thoughtless to have feelings facilitates the abhorrent conditions in which they are kept and ways they are treated by the industry.
I used to have a lovely tank, I think it was 50 gallons, and among other things I kept glass catfish. All the research at the time said they were hard to keep in captivity and prone to refusing to eat and starving themselves, and that they did not live long in captivity. But I was fascinated and had to try it. It took me about three days to realize none of the literature said a word about them being nocturnal. I started feeding them at night right before bed, and had zero problems getting them to eat, saw they were incredibly active as soon as the lights went off (I have exceptional night vision) and I kept them in excellent health for years. Exponentially beyond their captive life expectancy.
I think the commercial pet fish trade is abysmal in terms of actual working knowledge of fish.
The Tumblr writing community is dying.
Itās something Iāve noticed over the past two years of using this site. It was gradual, imperceptible at first, something that most would brush off as a silly concern, or fault Tumblr algorithm for. While itās true that Tumblrās engine leaves a lot to be desired, Iāve noticed that even popular blogs have started to dwindle in terms of interaction or motivation. There could be a lot of reasons for this, but the biggest two Iāve noticed, experienced myself, and asked fellow writers about is this: (1) content being stolen, and (2) lack of feedback or interaction. Iāve never seen any logical person defend content being stolen, so I want to address point 2 instead.
Lack of feedback and interaction. Iām not saying this on my behalf so much as Iām saying this for friends and smaller blogs who have lost motivation to write. I was looking at my yandere writing blogs list the other day and noticed that a good majority of them no longer write. I usually update the list every few months, and by that point, more and more writers have stopped writing entirely. This isnāt a problem confined solely to the yandere fandom; in fact, thereās less writing blogs in generalĀ these days, especially ones that are active. I used to run a very popular BNHA blog with some friends, but that dissolved after our content was stolen and our followers stopped interacting as much. Out of our 8,500 followers, we hardly got 0.015% notes (~128 notes) on an average post. Tumblr is to blame for the lack of eyes seeing our posts, for sure, but that also means that at least 128 people saw one post and didnāt leave a comment or ask. We were considered a big blog; imagine what itās like on a small blog.
My friend recently made a post that summed this up perfectly:Ā
āIāve seen people say āBe grateful that people even lurk on your page.ā and, while I get the message theyāre trying to say, itās more dismissive and hurtful in my opinion. Like youāre saying, āOh your writing is mediocre, you should be grateful people even LOOK at it.ā
Me personally? Iāve heard the argument that AO3 is a better place to post fanfics, and while that might be true, Iāve had friends experience firsthand the lack of interaction there too. Iāve heard the argument that interacting with some writers is intimidating (me included). Iāve heard that argument that followers might be too shy to interact. Iāve heard the argument that writers should write for themselves and not for views / likes / reblogs / etc, and while thatās ideal, itās not sustainable for everyone. What works for one writer wonāt work for another, but you know what will? Interaction.
That comment or ask that took you 2 seconds to write? We remember it. That reblog with the compliments in the tags? We remember it. Every singleĀ ānamedā anon we get (heart anon, sunflower anon, etc)? We remember them. And the best part is? Itās actually easier to do these things on Tumblr since you have the option to send anonymous asks or make a sideblog specifically for reblogs! Trust me, whether the lack of interaction is the cause of a lack of motivation or what have you, every writer appreciates feedback (donāt be shy to offer some critique or compliments) or even a simple keyboard smash with some emojis. Even sitting down for 5 min a day per week to comment on your favorite writersā new pieces makes a huge difference.Ā Personally, since Tumblrās activity feed is beyond terrible and I have over 1,500 posts, I donāt always see new reblogs or comments on my content; asks though? Always see those, can never go wrong with those. If you donāt want to reblog or leave a comment, then you can never go wrong with an anonymous ask.Ā
As my wise friend says: writing is an art, and in order to improve that art, we need other peopleās eyes to see what we donāt.
