“Those things’ll kill you.”
Steve blew a thick cloud of smoke into the air in front of him. “Yeah, well. I’ll send you the bill if that turns out to be true.”
Eddie’s laugh was sharp and a little fried from the same bad habit Steve was busying himself with. It still made his stomach flip, still made him want to run his mouth until Eddie was wheezing with it. He took another drag instead.
“Come on, Stevie. Pretty sure you were stealing cigarettes out of your mom’s purse before I was ever on your radar,” he pointed out correctly. “There’s a lot you could blame me for, but this particular vice isn’t on the list.”
Steve rolled his eyes. “You sure you wanna get into that right now?”
“Nah,” Eddie said, too quickly. “Just, you know. Wanted to say hi. See how you were doing. You look good.”
“So, you weren’t ignoring me over dinner then? Just waiting for the right moment?” Steve asked.
Eddie took the cigarette from his fingers, and the tips of his grazed Steve’s knuckles. “You’re impossible to ignore, Steve Harrington. Maybe I was just working up the nerve.”
“You were born with an excess of nerve. I find that hard to believe.”
