who up tingling they chuck
god I LOVE when I get to use books I read for fun in my university classes...like I get to sound well-read and intelligent when I did the work so long ago that it doesn't even feel like work anymore!
this is a sign to all the book girlies to read gothic lit and horror! I have used SO MANY of those books in political science, English and psychology classes.
I will never be able to live up to this Letterboxd review

Fanworks vs. Published Works
Okay, so, I was on Reddit and there was this discourse of fanfic v. published work, and how the lines are beginning to blur more and more, particularly among readers, and how dangerous this is for fandom spaces because fanfic is not designed for the same sort of engagement one has with a published work. They look similar and feel similar, but equating them can be devastating for fanfic writers, particularly if people start reviewing and critiquing fanworks the same way they do published works.
The comparison on that subreddit—which I had never encountered but might well have been around forever and new to no one but me because sometimes I do live in a cave—was that fanfic is like a potluck. And I love that because it's 100% accurate.
At a potluck, you make something for people to enjoy out of love. It’s really shitty to go to a potluck, then walk up to someone who made what you believe is a subpar casserole and start in like you’re a food critic. You’re missing the point of the potluck. And you’re kind of a dick.
In a restaurant, the rules are different, just like in the publishing industry. You select a restaurant, you pay for a meal, and if the meal isn’t to your liking, you can leave the restaurant a review on Google or Yelp or the platform of your choice (assuming you didn’t just throw a tantrum in the restaurant itself, but that’s another discussion). And sure, YMMV from other diners’ experiences, but even if everyone loves this restaurant and you don’t, it’s perfectly acceptable to leave a subpar review listing the reasons why it didn’t meet your standards. It’s fodder for future diners to consider at this point, less for the restaurant itself. The way book reviews are meant to be for readers, not the author. The author will see it, they might get annoyed, but unless they want their career to go up in smoke, they won’t respond. Just like restaurant owners who go nuclear on bad reviews, word spreads when someone can’t take criticism.
And no, it’s still not cool to critique someone’s potluck dish even if that person is a professional chef. They still elected to invest their time, talent, and creativity to bring that dish to the potluck and are getting nothing out of it but the satisfaction of their dish being enjoyed. The potluck should be a safe space for everyone—the chef knows to expect unsatisfied customers at work; when they’re at play, when they’re relaxed and enjoying something with a chosen community, it’s really shitty to start acting like a customer in the restaurant. You don’t have to love what they brought but keep it to yourself and go try something else.
As a published author, it bothers me a lot more when people invade my fanfic space to be critical than it does any of the 20+ works I have for sale on Amazon and other vendors, and this is why. Fanfic is more personal because it’s unpaid labor created out of love and a desire for community. It’s not a commodity, and treating it like that is how you murder joy and, for some creators, sometimes the drive to ever create again.
So don’t be a dick at the potluck, okay?
Just had an exchange that made me decide to share this again.

HorrorTok Lied To Me: Strange Pictures Review
Title: Strange Pictures Author: Uketsu Avg Goodreads Rating: 4.5⭐️ My Rating: 2⭐️ Book In a Word: tedious & annoying
So this is seemingly a hot take. I was so excited to see this book in my small town library cause I've heard its one of the best Japanese mystery/crime book. Now keep in mind this is my first dip into Japanese lit and a lot of the criticisms may only apply to this specific translation.
What I liked:
use of pictures
interesting premise
Issues:
The writing is overly simplistic, repetitive and tedious
Almost every chapter section/POV ended with some form of revelation we aren't privy to then fade to black
The constant POV switching was annoying and made it nearly impossible to give a shit about any character
Characters were cardboard cutouts
The reveals were confusing, unrealistic, stupid and disappointed
No suspense was built
Somehow dragged and felt rushed?
Advertised as horror, had basically no horror elements

you know a fic is good when it has this
reblog if you’ve read fanfictions that are more professional, better written than some actual novels. I’m trying to see something
currently reading The Most Famous Girl in the World by Iman Harris-Kia cause a pretty librarian said she liked it and why is NO ONE talking about this book!
the plot: interesting
the vibes: silly goofy
the satire: well-executed
the characters: unhinged
this truly has it all: hot lesbian bestie, horse girl companion, unhinged cynical fmc, theatre kid turned hot FBI agent she’s forced to get along with and an Anna Delvey type!

🍀 2024 March Reading Wrap Up 🍀
Books read: 0
So I've been hesitating posting a wrapup this month cause I committed the biggest crime in book blogging: not finishing anything. However I'm tired of the pressure book media puts on readers where you have to finish a lot of books and read all the time to be considered a 'reader' cause thats bullshit. I'm a university student with chronic illness, dealing with the death of a family member all while working so this month I didn't have the time/spoons to read as much as I did in January/ February and THATS OKAY! If you like books: CONGRATS you're a reader, thats the only prerequisite.
Anyway heres my little reading breakdown:
Books DNF'd - 2 Books in progress - 5
DNF list:
Purity
Bruised
Books in progress list:
It's Okay That You're Not Okay
Boyfriend Material
Red, White & Royal Blue
Camp Damascus
Maeve Fly
so i only read 1 book last month…looking back on last years post i realized i struggle with bad depression every march lol
anyway book review incoming, i’m just scared cause this is gonna be a hot take
Library Haul!
i’m impressed i only left with two books!! really working on my self control lmao
to show how INSANE book costs are in Canada, i saved $56.95 by getting them at the library! And these would be considered cheap smh

I HAVE THOUGHTS
I felt like cringing today so I watched a YouTuber I like reacting to an old video where a straight woman asked her family/friends if they think she's a lesbian and when asked, her brother mentioned that there are theories about her being a lesbian because shes a) never had a long term relationship with anyone and b) 6 of the guys she's dated have ended up being gay.
Is that stupid? Yes. Are they using the word lesbian as a slur? Also yes.
BUT it made me think of why it's a canon event for a lot of girls to date gay men before they came out.
Men (especially young men) who're into women sexually/romantically have a tendency to value toxically masculine ideals since that's what has been modelled for them. Unfortunately that means that many young straight men will treat women poorly and are unsafe to date (physically or emotionally). However society values women more when they are in a relationship. So there's an element of safety in dating someone who doesn't display behaviours or thoughts like:
making a women's body more important than her personhood
centring his sexual needs
being overly dominant and controlling
A way for a woman to get the social status of being a partnered person without the toxic gender roles and potential violence of young men is through finding a man that is not interested in a woman's sexuality at all, you get the companionship without the sexual violence. And for young gay men you get companionship and status while not putting yourself in danger by coming out. Obviously it may not be the most fulfilling but it's certainly a subconscious survival tactic for both parties.
Thanks for reading, just wanted to brain dump a little lol
