The same thing happens with hispanic and indigenous cultures. It's especially bad where I live. People complain about the latinos (re: 80% of the population) taking up the jobs and sitting on welfare checks, when we wouldn't have any of our cultural staples without them. They talk about the lazy, entitled natives. Then they line up for their white-washed western movies, they buy their Temu dream-catchers, they talk about spirit animals. They fry up tack-os on the barbecue and complain about how mindless and stupid reggaeton is while Taylor Swift is blasting.

And then I log onto social media and all I find is kiwifarms hunting of POCs, the degradation of black art to being "overstimulating" and only about "sex, drugs, and violence", the whitewashing of every fictional character. The complaints of making everything "political". About people being too angry and not being able to just "enjoy things" - a position of privilege from people who don't *have* to think about the hateful images in media they enjoy.

And when you point this out, hoards of white liberals that have never thought critically about race complain that you're mean for calling them racist, that they have to add their two cents, that they have to be "one of the good ones". If you can understand that axes of oppression often occur as the subtle denigration of a group - an often unconscious-bias that may present itself as "not agreeing with the lifestyle" or the like - then you can understand racism.

the thing is. this is what i would call an inside thought. nobody would have known you didn't get it if you didn't tell them that. if you recognised that it was important but didn't have the headspace to process it, you can reblog without commentary for others, or to come back to later. or you can save it somewhere and wait until you DO have the capacity to read it over a few more times, ponder it, consider what it might mean, figure out how to understand it, and THEN reblog it

but no. rushing to reblog while it is still opaque. rushing to admit to ignorance rather than spend the time to achieve understanding. perhaps hoping that somebody will break it down for you more simply, though to my mind it was quite simply phrased in the first place. never stopping to take the time first

comprehension is not always instant! sometimes it takes a bit of time for something to percolate after you read it; sometimes you need to read it a few times; sometimes you realise you don't have the context for it and either go and get the context or accept that it's not for you right now

first off, let's get this straight. Gangle is desi. i've seen people calling her black, probably due to her profile pic, but her last name is Raghavan. that's a desi name. (she could be mixed too maybe but dark-skinned indians absolutely exist)

now that that's cleared.. wow, the only desi character in this show is a woman who is constantly bullied, abused, humiliated and belittled by a white man (or woman, if you believe the trans theory but if Gooseworx is too chicken to confirm he's trans, that's not my fault).

asian women being weak and submissive is already a problematic trope. india is unfortunately still a very conservative and misogynistic country where abuse, domestic violence and SA is extremely normalized and condoned, so it's not very comforting to see an indian woman being subjected to all of that and not getting any justice or closure.

i don't really mind Gangle being an abuse victim if it was actually well-written. if it was actual social commentary instead of "haha look, this asian woman is getting tormented by this asshole, isn't that funny".

also as someone who's bipolar, Gangle being implied bipolar is also just written badly. her depression is never taken seriously by anyone except Zooble, her abuser is shown more sympathy and compassion than she is, and her arc goes nowhere.

and her presumed manic episode in the finale is also treated as a joke and implied to be exploited for SA. WOW this is deeply fucked up. sure, it's just Jax's fantasies but even that says something about the creators if they think they could just show a man fantasizing about sexually abusing someone in the middle of a manic episode, and then brush past it like it's nothing.

i have type 2 bipolar so thankfully i've never had a full-on manic episode, mine were more hypomanic. but i can't even imagine being in a situation like this where you have no control over your emotions and someone uses that to blackmail you into presumably sleeping with them.
