i think chell is immortal in the sense every time she dies she becomes something new, but keeps her memories. so more like reincarnation in a sense. her name is chell ‘cause thats what she used to be called in a past life and she wants to hold onto that. i think she used to be some sort of aquatic animal and thats how she gained such a fondness for the ocean and fish. (and also theyre pretty.) she’s in a bit of a cycle of death and rebirth but she remembers everything. she doesn’t mind either! she gets to live full lives, even if some of them have hardship or are cut short. she enjoys them all as much as she can! but she’s a little lonely. her friends all die eventually or she dies before them and comes back long after they’re dead. theres so much to see and enjoy but shes lonely, and its soul crushing.
i think eventually she begins to want to die, even though she knows she cant, but she tries to find a way, or at least die and come back in a form with less cognitive awareness, because then it’d be less painful all the time. she misses her friends and she misses a world she used to know, everything around her keeps changing, and she’s trying to love the world for what it is but its hard, and she’s tired. and i think whatever made her, decides to put her in a sort of loop? so when she dies she stays human. not to torture her (like she thinks), but to teach her to enjoy life again and to not just give up. to learn to live, because she has to, because she wants to. her immortality isn’t really a hinderance or negative thing, or something meant to torment her. it’s to help her, and let her experience every aspect of life, and to teach her to not give up, teach her to want to live again!
