yo what
it’s easy to poke fun at jamie’s insistence that the doctor needs him around for protection but not even a few minutes after he got sent home by the time lords the doctor was literally executed so maybe he had a point
Very obsessed with the thing Batgirl (2000) does where it acknowledges in every way that Cass and Bruce are so, so similar and Bruce knows that and wants to nurture that in her. The way that it spirals into him being so hard on her and allowing her to neglect herself despite how much he loves her because he’s so hard on himself and those feelings transfers. And Cass takes to this! She ignores her personal life and pushes herself so hard even though she feels like she’s never doing enough and she’s Just Like Him, and that hurts her.
Then you have Barbara who also loves Cass so deeply and can recognize the harm in the way she’s living her life so she clashes with Bruce and she works hard to teach Cass to read and encourages her to live a life outside of just being Batgirl. Yet Babs can be misguided in how she approaches Cass, seemingly struggling to understand the way Cass’s needs differ from hers and simply assuming the correct way to go about things is the way she should, treating Cass like she is Just Like Her, and that hurts her too.
I would like other people's perspectives on something.
So. The The Talons of Weng-Chiang is incredibly racist. However, I've seen it get singled out a lot as like the most racist Doctor Who story and I'm not sure why? I'm not trying to defend it here - as stated it's incredibly racist - but so are a number of 60s stories. Tomb of the Cybermen and The Celestial Toymaker are both examples off the top of my head.
So I guess I don't know why Talons is being singled out, and that feels like something I should know. Hence my bringing it up. No pressure - if you don't have the spoons for this sort of discussion, ignore this post. But I wanted to ask.
One point I’ve seen brought up is that in most serials that are racist, the racism is one (problematic—I’m not excusing it!) part of a bigger story that they shouldn’t have have included and tainted an otherwise good or at least acceptable plot. But in talons, the entire premise is based on racism and can’t really exist without the racist assumptions
Tomb of the Cybermen is racist because it has a Black character that they do nothing with except throw into a flat stereotyped nothing of a character, but if they had treated that character better or not included him the story wouldn’t really change. There’s also that racist…Tibetan brownface monk time lord guy? in planet of the spiders. Which is a problem. But he could be removed and the plot itself would remain, which means that it’s relatively easy to enjoy the stories around the racism, if you can ignore or overlook some parts (which not everyone will want to, understandably). But in talons (by my understanding, having not watched it), there is no part of the plot that isn’t focused on racist ~Chinese mysticism~ ideas
the talons of weng-chiang is also standout in that it hails from the most popular era of classic who - the hinchcliffe years. the toymaker is a well-liked story and the planet of the spiders comes from a generally well-regarded era, but the talons of weng-chiang is often listed as an all-time great doctor who story and then you check the plot and it's "chinese people are evil drug addicts, anyway here's a guy in yellowface doing a horrific accent". talons is one of the stories which is arguably "representative" of the fourth doctor. it's on par with the deadly assassin or the pyramids of mars (which is also vaguely racist). it's a Robert Holmes Classic. a lot of people are really eager to defend the racism in the talons of weng-chiang in a way they wouldn't with other stories (mainly because they don't care about them). in my experience, part of the extremity of the backlash is because any backlash is often met with people telling you to calm down and it's a really good story if you ignore the racism.
it's really difficult to ignore the racism! because it's insanely racist! i think it's horrible that it's so popular! you're welcome to enjoy watching it, i can't tell anyone what to think. but god, it's so racist, and i'm fed up with being told it's not.
^ yeah I think this is a big part of it. I've only relatively recently seen ppl acknowledging how racist it is.
I remember listening to the interviews for the first season of Jago and Litefoot (around 2010!!!) and they spend so much of it gushing about Talons without even a 'if you ignore the racism'. Genuinely bizarre.
FWIW tho I don't find its having been made in the 70s especially shocking. I think it's pretty par for the course for the UK in the 70s.

I’m sure this is a terrifying situation for Turlough, alas any sense of urgency I might take from this passage is dampened by me only being able to picture him jumping into the Doctor’s arms Scooby Doo style.
Anyway I think my fav thing about Tegan is that it's obvious from her intro that she is in fact a very friendly, upbeat and good natured person, it's just that her primary reaction to stress is to get really mad and from the moment she steps into the tardis onwards she's stressed out basically 24/7
I think Tegan really does want to think of herself as a nice chilled out person who doesn't let stuff get to her 😇 but the reality is as soon as things aren't going her way she's like bites you bites you bites you
I think Tegan would love to bite someone btw. Just bite down full force and not let go. Just 1 time. I think it would fix her ♥️
Tegan would be like 'Doctor I don't like Turlough, I don't know what it is but he gives me the creeps, there's just something not right about him' and the Doctor would be like 'wow Tegan I can't believe you'd be so prejudiced. I'm shocked at this display of homophobia. i think you owe Turlough an apology.' and Tegan would be left just sputtering in indignation.
The Doctor: are you homophobic, Tegan?
Tegan: I'm a lesbian
Turlough, from the other side of the console room: she's avoiding the question Doctor
Snakedance might be the best Doctor Who serial of all time. A well fleshed out and interesting alien culture that rounds out the Mara’s influence and the story while also being given enough breathing room to feel genuine. An extremely young Martin Clunes as a spoiled princeling. The one time Tegan can shake the Mara’s influence is because Nyssa is there with her. The Doctor completely losing all if his self-discipline in the face of Tegan’s possession. The Mara using intimidation to frighten the crowd to look at him but using Tegan terrified and begging for help to attempt to frighten the Doctor. Nyssa wearing possibly the ugliest outfit a companion has ever worn. Serial of all time you will never hear me speak against it.
I am scared this is all I will ever be

mutuals please do this to me
A being ten thousand times your size picks you up and gives you a massage that's so good that it fixes you
Thinking about how the Doctor’s curiosity and deeply emotional personality leaves them alienated from the emotionally stifled Gallifrey, but their nature as a Time Lord leaves them unable to truly connect with the companions they surround themselves with and realizing that the Doctor holds the same appeal to me as the world’s loneliest whale and it’s song no other whale hear.
