For public libraries, one of the ways we secure funding year to year is lending. Governments don’t want to fund more books if they’re not being used and the way we measure use is by issues. Regardless of whether you read it or not, whether you have it for a day or a month, if you issue it to your library card, we get the stats! It makes the library look good!

I'm not really sure how the jeweler got the rights to use that piece in the first place. Altering a thousands of years old piece to use commercially sounds a little sketchy, but I'll be honest I haven't looked into it closely. Some facebook posts say "inspired by", but every news outlet says it contains actual artifacts, and the jeweler themselves describe it as "our 1st Millenium BC 18k yellow gold and diamond Ancient Disc earrings"

EDIT: I'm operating under the assumption these are legitimate artifacts, as described by the news outlets and brand. If not, obviously this is all out the window, but I'm going off of the info I have.

According to people who know more about the topic than me, the discs most closely resemble pieces from the Ziwiye treasures, and therefore would come from the Iranian plateau region. Using this as a generic ancient looking piece for a Greek story is a choice, especially when there was already some pushback on few Greek actors being used (I think there's one, but not in the main cast) I'm hoping it's some nod to ancient trade or something, and not Hollywood's typical "all ancient societies are interchangeable aesthetically" attitude

As a positive, I know there's a lot of the discourse in the archaeology world around honoring artifacts by using them the way they were meant to be used and bringing them into public sphere of awareness vs. being locked away in museums. I'm not a historian, and don't have a strong opinion on this, but this definitely does seem to accomplish that goal

Probably the thing that jumped to my mind the strongest was that if this were anyone other than Zendaya it would be roasted universally. Let me be clear: this isn't comparable to Kim Kardashian wearing Marilyn Monroe's dress, Zendaya didn't fundamentally alter the pieces in order to wear them on a red carpet (though it could be argued whether or not the jeweler did) However, if someone like Kim wore the exact same earrings to the exact same premiere, you know there would be exclusively criticism rather than praise, and I don't love that. This isn't a knock on Zendaya, it's a knock on celebrity culture
