there was so much Plant Subtext in the Plant Subtext Chapter
I love how Susie and Ralsei are also hype for the shadowbosses
like they've just actually been having a great time this entire time fighting these stupid hard guys with their stupid cool battle themes
ugh im obsessed with sinners
ok i am not black but i am part of a culture whos spirituality has been reappropriated and whitewashed into stuff like "boho" and "hippie culture" alongside many other people (you can guess teehee). i found sinners' use of spirituality to be so fascinating (this is a gross oversimplification in a tumblr ask there is SO MUCH)
i think its so refreshing to see spirituality not only uninfluenced by christianity and colonialization but outright rejected by characters as well as being the thing that saves them from that FIEND who picked poor robin clean. All of them died regardless but Smoke and Sammie would not have survived without Annie's guidance (also annie got to reunite with her daughter!! I was sad she died but atleast that FIEND didnt get her)
And i think thats why I Lied To You was so out of this world. its such a celebration of so many things and the connection to spirituality is one of them. Esp in horror movies where cultures of black and american indigenous people are prominently used as villains for the story where theyre outrighr appropriated and demonized as pagan- and here is sinners with amazing rep for spirituality that is actually shared among cultures in the case of the grigot
Anyway all of this is a HUGE tldr but yeah just needed to show my love
I Lied To You takes me to a different realm every time I give it a listen. That whole movie is a nice refreshing glass of water in this dry ass political climate.

Talking about Miraculous Ladybug, Lila Rossi's plotlines just keeps getting more and more ridiculous. Are you seriously telling me that she manaaged to have three different identities, three different mothers, and that somehow NONE of them suspect that she may be lying about her Life? Three grown women are absolutely unable to tell if a fourteen year old kid is lying or not? Its super obvious that Astruc doesnt know what to do with her character.
It's really strange to me when a show decides that its main villain is no longer going to be a grown ass man and instead picks,,,,,a teenage girl,,,,
It's not really the girlboss feminist move people think it is, quite the opposite actually.
Hey, this is the "negative opinions" ask anon again.
Thanks for the response. To be honest, when I sent out the ask, I thought you had more specific things to talk about for each of the negatives, but your response was fine. I'm kind of disturbed by the amount of overlaps in similarities between them though...
Anyways, I was just wondering about your reasons for your positive opinions as well. A lot of them look very varied, so I bet you have more diverse and very different reasons you like them that you could share.
Certainly~!
MLP: Love the music and the songs, and I generally enjoy the way most themes in the show are represented, namely the Elements and the Pillars by extension. I enjoy the latter seasons a lot more than I enjoy the earlier, though overall my opinion is more mixed than positive. I think that for whatever my likes and dislikes are, I could rant extensively either way.
Jordan Peele Films: Putting Black people in center stage in horror that doesn't have us dying just because. Amazing soundtrack and cinematography, while covering issues that not only affect the Black community but also those that come from within.
A24 Films: I've watched enough A24 films to say that I generally enjoy whatever they happen to produce or work on. Namely the color grading and intense visuals are what always stand out to me; watching them always feels like I'm being sucked into a new world each time.
Sinners: It's so hard for me to gather my thoughts about Sinners without getting overwhelmed almost immediately because there is SO much to talk about. The casting, the music, the themes, the spirituality, the ATMOSPHERE. One of the most important Black films that I think has ever been made, especially in the recent century.
Black Panther 1: Another important film to Black culture; this film truly captured the essence of Afro-futurism and brought so many Black people into the spotlight to be adored and truly shine. Though it ended bitterly, I appreciated the conversation that was had between Africans and African-Americans when it came to dealing with the effects of colonization and slavery.
The Piano Lesson: If you liked Sinners, then The Piano Lesson should be on your watch list for sure. A lively cast, wonderful soundtrack, and an amazing lesson on heritage and ancestry, and where a Black people's traditions originate from.
Goat: A Black furry movie?? Hell yeah I'm going to enjoy it! I thought all the characters were so charming, the messaging solid, and the animation was beautiful. I love to see a young Black boy be so in touch with his emotions, with so many Black women around him as idols and role models to look up to. It's nice to see Caleb McLaughlin have a chance to really shine after the way he was treated on Stranger Things. Also lowkey the movie feels like a transmasc/ trans man allegory but that's just me tho
Sailor Moon: She ain't the mother of Magical Girls for nothing. I was not prepared for when I first watched this show to have it talk about love in so many different ways. I know people say that Sailor Moon is about love and peace, but it really really is. Love between lovers, between friends, between siblings, between mother and daughter...I'd be lying if I said it didn't influence my writing.
Madoka Magica: I watched this show when I was young, and as morbid as it was, it really stayed with me. I think that many other magical girl animes have tried and failed to emulate the darker themes of the show, because they lack the layering and metaphors. Rebellion was an excellent movie for that reason.
Frieren: I like the way this show discusses time and evolution. One of few animes I was able to watch without cringing from some unnecessary perversion or questionable comments. Beautiful animation and yet again giving us more strong female characters. Though I will say the fanbase as of late is absurdly racist and incredibly entitled.
Apothecary Diaries: Honestly...I'm going to take a risk and say I don't think there's anything wrong with this show. Like at all. So many well written female characters? Multiple conversations about sexual assault that aren't fetishized in the source material? Doesn't excuse p3dophilic culture for the sake of the time period?? Subverting the "time period accurate but contemporarily questionable age gap" trope by having Jinshi be YOUNGER than he says he is?? Respect for sex workers ?? Y'all can't tell me shit about Apothecary Diaries ooooooo that's my shit right there.
The Owl House: The first animated series I've seen that said "actually it's really disrespectful to tell people to forgive the colonizer, kill that man". Also the first animated series to effortlessly give us multiple non binary characters, one of which is the main character.
Persona 4: The best of the worst in terms of the 3 newer Persona games we have. I enjoyed the story and narrative of this game the most, and I liked the many side quests they offered. Though it definitely has some glaring faults, especially as the game progresses (*cough* Naoto *cough*).
The Mononoke Movies: The third movie is out and while I haven't watched it...yet...I enjoyed the first two for bringing us so many nuanced and well written female characters in such a stressful time period in Japanese history. The visual metaphors and story layering is so captivating, and I love the designs of the characters we get. One of the themes that comes up again and again is bodily autonomy, and I think the way the movies handle that conversation is something more people should pay attention to.
Garten of Banban: Already talked about this before but I find it cringey and fun, and very refreshing to the mascot horror genre. I like that it doesn't try to be anything it isn't, and I like that it doesn't shove a message down your throat that completely contradicts what the game is doing.
Cinderella (50s ver.): Stay tuned~ This gets its own post!
The Wiz: The Black version of the Wizard of Oz, the music and casting was phenomenal. It is whimsical and a little morbid but very empowering all at the same time, such an interesting genre that Black people are not often a part of. Honestly, this is something I'd have to make my own post about...or maybe some other type of long form content..
POSE: Ugh, this show is such a refreshing piece of queer media to consume. We get to peek into the lives of Black and Caribbean Hispanic trans women at the height of the AIDs epidemic in 80s New York. It is so emotional and thought provoking, and provides so much nuance to the different things people had to do to survive while trying to fight for their dreams. I can't get enough of it and most importantly...it has a happy ending~
Infinity Train: The four seasons we got were very well done, each one covering a different theme of separation and moving on. I would say if Death the Tarot Card was a show, it would be Infinity Train. For a limited number of episodes that are less than half an hour long, each season packs a punch and always wraps up nicely.
Bojack Horseman: Satire done right. Comedy done right. Bojack Horseman does a lot of things right, especially with its main character. I wrote a post on this page where I compare Bojack to Jax from TADC when it comes to how the show handles "bad character does bad things and then experiences consequences". Such a lovely cast overall and something I'm always going back to rewatching.
Long Story Short: From the creators of Bojack Horseman, we get Long Story Short! A shorter series describing a Jewish family going through the years and navigating the challenges of life. It has the same rhythm as its counterpart, just different themes! I can't reccommend it enough!

i havent finished deltarune chapter 5 yet but i rly feel strongly that the analysis fruit is Ripening this chapter. the town phase at the beginning of the game has never felt more claustrophobic. the way the adults, even when theyre trying to be supportive or kind, keep projecting their own baggage and nostalgia onto the kids, keep entangling them in all these roles and traditions. also maybe a weird thing to be excited about but i kinda like that despite the overwhelming queerness of the series its not like an idyllic world free from the influence of gender/sexuality and class norms. ive written a little about how i think kris' transness functions within the text and theres been some rly good queer analysis in general so i like seeing the direction of the story show an equal interest in the subject.
maybe this will change by the time i finish the chapter but i straight up dont think kris is working with carol/that carol is the mystery phone voice. i think the reason carol is so weird about kris is because shes just one of a number of characters that are trying to coerce them into occupying a specific role. i think shes trying to make noelle into a version of dess she still has control over, a version she can keep safe, and kris is intended to be the asriel to noelles dess, as well as a bridge to repair the relationship between their respective families. i dont totally expect the series to explicitly name this as homophobic/transphobic, and im not sure if carol herself would even look at it that way, but i do think its implied.
AND LEST IT BE FORGOTTEN this chapter establishing that ralsei is starting to gain more autonomy and opinions and overall personhood only for flowery to forcibly, literally, closet him. and then symbolically closet him by putting him back in the hat to hide his appearance, as if to revert him back to the state when he was more docile and self objectifying. like..............

i guess a part of what's not clicking about ch5 for me is that while i occasionally wonder if i'm taking things at face value that're meant to be dismantled by the viewer (flowery claiming to be self-actualized and that he's able to "do anything" while ultimately being a puppet to his need to please asgore, susie not questioning anything because she's clinging to the prophecy and how things are "supposed to be", asgore not really confronting his misogyny even when he claims to be, dess and asriel being presented as a couple while clearly having little in common beyond their status as neighbors, the dark worlds being framed as something that must be "moved on from" because they aren't "real", ect.) i feel like those facades should already be getting dismantled by the narrative at this point. i feel like ch5 writes around ch4 (as opposed to through it) so much that it's hard for me to quite believe these things are natural extensions of the things set up there and in chapters prior. to me, it feels like an entire chapter of "he'd bounce" scenes. the surrounding context makes it seem like these questionable mindsets and societal constructs aren't meant to be questionable at all.
prefacing this by saying i'm not sure how much of this was intentional given how asgore is coddled by the writing in this chapter; but flowery's dynamic with asgore does interest me somewhat. i don't think it's a stretch to say that just as the other flowers are clearly invoking the idea of their counterparts from undertale, so too is flowery invoking flowey, but even within deltarune itself he is very clearly evoking asriel; he is the popular, "charismatic" golden boy, informed by all the reminders of asriel's feelings for dess kris encountered that morning. he tries to do things with asgore that asgore did or wanted to do with asriel; going to the diner together, skateboarding, and so on. but he also reads metaphorically as asgore's neglected child on his own merits; begging asgore to forget about the past he's obsessed over and play with him and his friends only to be sternly rebuked in a way that seems to evoke how he may have acted towards his light-world children as chief of police. in spite of claiming to be nothing like ralsei, flowery is exactly like them; a flowerner whose only concern is asgore and making asgore happy. he wants asgore to move on from the past and spend time in the darkness with him, but as long as he unwittingly clings to his purpose, things will always go back to the sun-lit way they used to be, and he will never become more than a flower. he's his own person, but his identity is strangled by his fate and by the person he owes his life to.
i do think it's interesting, all that said, that flowery also kind of models himself after rudy. it seems like rudy is one of the few people that asgore still pays attention to; asgore clearly has romantic feelings for rudy, but moreover, rudy supports his schemes while toriel does not, rudy was asgore's friend from long ago, and i don't doubt that rudy may have taken precedence over asgore's light-world children in occasion if his neglectful behavior is anything to go off of. flowery seems to have learned a lot of his misogynistic perspective on asgore and toriel's situation from asgore, as well (recall that flowery is, while a living thing, not alive the way a lightner is, and would be just as unaware of the specifics of things as queen and tenna; this isn't to make excuses for him, but rather to inform the situation at large;) i can easily see why he would form a more favorable opinion of rudy, and why he would see acting like the rudy of asgore's stories as the best way to get asgore's attention in spite of the fact that he primarily sees asgore as something like to a father figure. the rudyisms are largely a façade, gestures and words mimicked hollowly in a bid to gain approval from asgore, and they're a lot more downplayed when he's not around. around the party, he acts more like kris' popular, snarky, pompous older brother instead.
it really, really hurts to see asgore see this extremely concerning behavior and go "ah, this must be how my ex-wife felt when i harassed her!" because, well, asgore's treatment of toriel is misogynistic, intentionally or not. flowery's treatment of asgore in particular doesn't carry any of the same implications that asgore's treatment of toriel does, as i've discussed here before. it only strengthens, at least in my eyes, the reading of asgore as a neglectful father or father-like figure (since obviously the flower friends aren't all related to one another); even when met with a group of children and young adults who see his care for them as something they owe him recompense for, all he can think of is how it inconveniences him. all flowery can do is beg at his feet for asgore to look at him, just once, and even when he dresses up like the person asgore used to look at all the time, all asgore can see is his own reflection. he can't see flowery for what he really is; an obnoxious, pompous young man, certainly, but a young man who relies on him nonetheless.
