Jetsons Promotional Art

Scene from the famous 1962 episode of the Jetsons, A Date With Jet Screamer.  Not only did Hanna-Barbera’s cartoon give us a colorful atomic age/Googie look at the 2060s, this episode gave us the awesome teen pop idol of the future, Jet Screamer, and his infectious tune, “Eep Opp Ork (Means I love You).  Daughter Judy Jetson was a Jet Screamer fan girl whose father, George, intentionally mixed up her entry to Jet Screamer’s lyric writing competition with her younger brother Elroy’s secret code chart.  It turns out that Elroy’s code was selected as the winning entry.  On a technical note, Judy was the legitimate winner because she also wrote the code words for Elroy!

Look at the eye-catching shapes.  Teen like in the 2060s as seen in the 1960s must be fun!

It looks like a promo picture for a Pan Am spaceliner stewardess in 2001: A Spacy Odyssey, but that’s unlikely.  Anyone with more information on this panpunk vintage vision, I’d greatly appreciate it.

Thundera Travel Poster

Panpunk art with its characteristic traits of bold, flat, borderless shapes in complimentary colors, the absence of black, and striking, wildly-shaped character designs.  This 1960s-esque poster invites the offworld traveller to a land from 1980s sci-fi/fantasy, Thundercats’ setting of Thundera.

3x3 Phase 20 Three-Wheeler by Arturo Arino

This vehicle was made with function in designThe blue lights in the tires are reminiscent of Tron’s light cycles.  From the feature’s web site:

Buck Rogers TV Concept Art by Bob McCall

Bob McCall is responsible for many of the famous vintage visions of the 1970s and 1980s.  Here he was commissioned to re-interpret the designs for the TV series, “Buck Rogers in the 25th Century.  His ideas were tronpunk but had a bit of retro flair themselves, only fitting since it’s based n an earlier series.  Here is the ship that appeared in the program’s opening sequence.

Form Beyond Function by Patrick A. Razzo

This motorcycle is an example of ultra-futurism, which features extreme shapes and forms. This vehicle’s wheels look like two Epcot Centers (tm). Patrick Razzo designed this for the movie Lostboy.

Disney’s Tomorrowland by Syd Mead

While we’re discussing Syd Mead (see previous post), he designed the magnificant retro world of Tomorrowland!  Syd was definitely in his comfort zone designing a panpunk landscape on a grand scale!  Just the visuals of this breathtaking world-of-tomorrow alone makes it worth watching Brad Bird’s sci-fi action adventure.  Look for other Tomorrowland art elsewhere in Blippcrunk.

Number 12 by Syd Mead (2004)

Syd Mead is a well-established futurist whose forward-projecting imagery now has a retro feel while still delivering bold visions.  This tronpunk racing motorcycle exhibits features and motifs from his famous “Spinner” car, including the thick wheels with smooth hubcaps held in place by fenders.  The design on this heavily-commercialized vehicle personally reminds me of the Transformer Technobot motorcycle, Afterburner (1987).  Observe the other racers whizzing by in the background as #12 makes a pit stop.

Concept art from the iconic Stanley Kubrick film.  This image, unlike the widescreen presentation in the movie itself, provides a sense of the scale in the Discovery’s interior.

Interstellar Queen on Red Sky World by Angus McKie

Angus McKie is my favorite tronpunk era artist, for his renditions of spacecraft with a sense of gravitas and mass, and this particular spaceliner, here named the Interstellar Queen, is my favorite ship, and this is mt favorite of his many renditions of the Interstellar Queen.

This image wasn’t painted for the Terran Trade Authority series of books, but this and many other images of the Interstellar Queen appear in the series’ first book, Spacescraft: 2000 to 2100 AD, where it got its name.  This book has been mentioned already on Blippicrunk and is a milestone book of the 1970s wave British sci-fi artists.

Angus McKie’s image of the ship being fueled and prepped at a station also appears as the cover image of volume 16 of the 25-book anthology: Issac Asimov Presents the Great SF Classics, reprinting year-by-year the best sci-fi stories from 1939 through 1964.

Cyberupnk often times combines the soft beautiful curves of a woman with the high-tech cold forms of machinery.  Was this commissioned by Adidas?  I don’t know.  Dashes of red accent an otherwise colorless pod scheme.

A vintage vision from the Star Weekly periodical in the atompunk era.  Rocket packs have been popular speculation since even before the dieselpunk days of Flash Gorden!  But in the white picket fence future of pan-punk, the application of technology to domestic life was paramount.
