It was not in vain that the young hobbits came with us, if only for Boromir’s sake' he 'escaped' damnation by futilely dying for the hobbits, it was 'not in vain' that Merry and Pippin were there so he could die for their sake, so that in the end when Faramir half-dreams his brother's body washing down the anduin he 'looks more beautiful than he even did in life'.
