I've always seen this as an invitation for someone else to chime in and to play in this little open/semi-open universe that is being created. To add to the story in turns to make it a proper one. Though part of it may be allowing it to be open-ended for possibilities of different timelines and AUs to be created, I think the best story is one that is not created alone.
