very very few other tv shows have ever actually been willing to Go There on how violent, & specifically sexually violent, the family is. not just An aberrant dysfunctional family but capital-T capital-F The Family. the thing that enables & produces & prolongs so much of the sexual violence in this show is the family. AND not even necessarily because of a lack of love or care. margaret wells loves her daughters. it did not stop her selling them to be raped by the highest bidder, and in fact it was precisely her love for them coupled with the absolute power she held/holds over them as their parent that allowed her to do it. a lot of the women in the show who are presented as good, or at least better, mothers are that precisely because they've kept their children as far away from them as possible
