Hey guys! As a writer myself, itâs hard to have a lot of resources for writing in one place. Thatâs why I decided to create this masterpost, and maybe make more if I find future resources. I hope you like it, and expect to see more masterposts like this in the future!

Im looking forward to reading for my nephews or nieces someday. There are so many books I want to show them
In 2006 a high school English teacher asked students to write a famous author and ask for advice. Kurt Vonnegut was the only one to respond - and his response is magnificent: âDear Xavier High School, and Ms. Lockwood, and Messrs Perin, McFeely, Batten, Maurer and Congiusta:
I thank you for your friendly letters. You sure know how to cheer up a really old geezer (84) in his sunset years. I donât make public appearances any more because I now resemble nothing so much as an iguana.
What I had to say to you, moreover, would not take long, to wit: Practice any art, music, singing, dancing, acting, drawing, painting, sculpting, poetry, fiction, essays, reportage, no matter how well or badly, not to get money and fame, but to experience becoming, to find out whatâs inside you, to make your soul grow.
Seriously! I mean starting right now, do art and do it for the rest of your lives. Draw a funny or nice picture of Ms. Lockwood, and give it to her. Dance home after school, and sing in the shower and on and on. Make a face in your mashed potatoes. Pretend youâre Count Dracula.
Hereâs an assignment for tonight, and I hope Ms. Lockwood will flunk you if you donât do it: Write a six line poem, about anything, but rhymed. No fair tennis without a net. Make it as good as you possibly can. But donât tell anybody what youâre doing. Donât show it or recite it to anybody, not even your girlfriend or parents or whatever, or Ms. Lockwood. OK?
Tear it up into teeny-weeny pieces, and discard them into widely separated trash recepticals. You will find that you have already been gloriously rewarded for your poem. You have experienced becoming, learned a lot more about whatâs inside you, and you have made your soul grow.
God bless you all!
Kurt Vonnegut

When I was 15 I spent a month working on an archeological dig. I was talking to one of the archeologists one day during our lunch break and he asked those kinds of âgetting to know youâ questions you ask young people: Do you play sports? Whatâs your favorite subject?  And I told him, no I donât play any sports. I do theater, Iâm in choir, I play the violin and piano, I used to take art classes. Â
And he went WOW. Thatâs amazing! And I said, âOh no, but Iâm not any good at ANY of them.âÂ
And he said something then that I will never forget and which absolutely blew my mind because no one had ever said anything like it to me before: âI donât think being good at things is the point of doing them. I think youâve got all these wonderful experiences with different skills, and that all teaches you things and makes you an interesting person, no matter how well you do them.â
And that honestly changed my life. Because I went from a failure, someone who hadnât been talented enough at anything to excel, to someone who did things because I enjoyed them. I had been raised in such an achievement-oriented environment, so inundated with the myth of Talent, that I thought it was only worth doing things if you could âWinâ at them.Â

Words Pretty
Reasons to Keep Writing
â˘everyone starts small. just because youâre not big now, doesnât mean youâll never be. and if youâre just starting out, keep in mind those bigger blogs have been writing for much longer than you. building a following takes time.Â
â˘there will always be someone who enjoys your writing. every like, reblog, and comment is one person who enjoyed what you wrote and i can assure you they want more! and remember, not everyone remembers to leave evidence that they liked your writing or they might just be too nervous to interact with you. invisible fans exist, and youâve got them.
â˘going along with that last one, your writing has the potential to help others! you could write about a minority, or maybe you could publish a little something comforting at the exact time someone else needs it. and most of the time, when you affect someone like this theyâll tell you, whether it be through tags, or a private message or whatever. thatâs an amazing feeling.
â˘getting a compliment from someone becomes a sure-fire way to make your day better. nothing feels greater than seeing a comment from someone saying how much they love something you worked hard on. maybe write down these comments somewhere, so you can look at them when youâre feeling negative about your skills as a writer. Â
â˘writerâs block is not the end of your writing career. it sure feels like it sometimes, but everyone, even the popular writers you look up to, suffer from writerâs block. everyone puts out work theyâre not 100% satisfied with sometimes, and thatâs okay! when you get out of this slump, your writing will be better than ever before and youâll enjoy it again. keep writing through a block so you can get there sooner.
These are the things I think about when I feel bad about my writing, so I hope they can help someone else too.

here is a super helpful website for this kinda thing!
the first result isnât always the one youâre looking for but when you press enter itâll give you a ton of words related to your query thatâll probably have what youâre wanting, or something better
hereâs some examples:

4theWords Writing RPG!
Iâve been taking a bit of a break from reading this past week to work on writing my own book and I started using the 4theWords.com website to get some words down. It makes writing into an RPGÂ complete with monsters to battle, quests to complete, avatars to customize, etc.
I went from writing maybe 1,000-1,500 words max a day to having a 5K and 3.5K day back to back. Major productivity increase (plus battling the monsters is fun!).
If any of you are writers out there and hadnât heard of 4theWords before, make sure to check it out! You can also get free crystals for game play by using the referral code below.

Advice for you guys I 100% believe.
Literally, you can get almost anything you want if you absolutely refuse to give up.
Someone wonât publish your book? Literally, refuse that. Keep marketing and sending it around. Refuse.
Stephen King did that. Now, look at him. So many others did that.
Literally, do not lie down. Determination is your best friend. Think you canât finish your book? Literally, refuse to give up.
This can be applied to any job. Any goal. Any aspiration. Iâm going to be that one writer that literally wonât take a no for an answer.
Respectfully, I will keep moving. Keep asking different publishers. Someone will want your book.
Thanks I needed this today â¤

I love the ambiguity of the term âWIPâ. Is it a project in itâs third draft? A final draft being queried? An idea I came up with six months ago and havenât written anything about yet? You donât know. Nobody knows.Â
Least of all the author
The best part about this being an uncaptioned picture is it is simultaneously âWe know, but hey!â and also âthere is an AUTHOR loose in a word processorâ
Thereâs an AUTHOR loose in a word processor!
Nobody knows what the authorâs gonna do, least of all the author.
When thereâs an author loose in a word processor, ya gotta stay updated, so all day long you refresh AO3 going, âwhatâd the author do today?â The updates arenât bad, sometimes theyâre just odd. Itâll be like, âthe author uploaded a 50k one shot they wrote in one night?â I didnât know people who slept could do that.
There are quiet days where people are like, âit seems like the author has gone to bed and taken some time for self care,â and then ten seconds later the author is like, âIâM GONNA POST EVERY WIP I CAME UP WITH IN THE LAST FOUR MONTHS. IâVE GOT INSOMNIA AND WRITERâS BLOCK, IâM AN AUTHOR!â Thatâs what I thought youâd say you fucking brilliant author! â¤ď¸đâ¤ď¸
There were precisely zero reasons to come out and drag me so effectively like this.
and then⌠THEN you go to the comments and see people who are like âyou should be sleepingâ and itâs like:
âWEâRE WELL PAST THATâ

The Legend of King Arthur - Keyframe Design by Nadide Ăçba
people talk all the time about âprimal instinctsâ and itâs usually about violence or sexual temptations or something, but your humanity comes with a lot of different stuff that we do without really thinking about, that we do without being told to or prompted to
your average human comes pre-installed with instincts to:
Befriend
Tell story
Make Thing
Investigate
Share knowledge
Laugh
Sing
Dance
Empathize with
Create
we are chalk full of survival instincts that revolve around connecting to others (dog-shaped others, robot-shaped, sometimes even plant-shaped) and making things with our hands
your primal instincts are not bathed in blood- they are layered in people telling stories to each other around a fire over and over and putting devices together through trial and error over and over and reaching for someone and something every moment of the way
~âYour primal instincts are not bathed in blood.â
My god this is beautiful. Such a refreshing change of pace to the constant glorification of instinctual human violence.
