My husband and I were walking across the park today going down to work. As we started down that godawful steep-ass hill towards the store, I noticed a woman I didn't recognize, probably on her way to the park. As we closed in, I smiled politely, but half a step to passing her she turned and beamed at me, "Jeffrey!?" Now I see a lot of people through the store in a day and this woman really looked like any other generic middle aged woman you'd see at a farmers market, and people stop me on the sidewalk all the time so I assumed she just had the wrong name.
"Oh no, sorry it's Arthur!" I said, with a smile, apologizing for no reason.
And let me tell you this woman's entire face totally changed and she looked me dead in the eye and said, "King Arthur? Of the round table? I have a message for you. It's really important. King Arthur, you know they are coming for you and they are going to try to take your power. They're coming for you and your power and, do you know the ring of Gygas? I don't have it. I don't have it on me. I think it's shaped like a flower. It could protect you but they're looking for it too. I'm a philosopher."
And I didn't say, "well fuck lady, actually I'm also a philosopher but I'm really starting to regret it?" but I was certainly starting to think it as she continued, "There are things with power but they're out there looking for them too. I'm really a philosopher, I recently graduated! They have it in the York university archives, you know in Toronto, this staff with an eye. You know the evil eye, you need protection from it. Watch out for it! When the eye opens that's when they'll try to steal your power, when the raindrops look like eyes, that's when they're coming. They have the philosopher's stone too, it's a Lapis Lazuli and they have it at York university. You know I'm a philosopher."
I'm stupid so I said, "a Lapis, so the philosopher's stone is blue? I always thought it was red." Husband looked like he was going to kill me.
"No, no, it's blue, it's blue like," and she kindof gestured upwards, "it's blue. And it's as big as the sky. Be careful King Arthur they will try to take your power. When the raindrops look like eyes!"
So I dunno I thanked her, I said I was sorry I had to get to work but I appreciated the warning and it was great to talk to her. She called out after as we walked away "Good luck! Good luck King Arthur!"
But damn, it DOES feel like people are always coming for my power these days and I'm kindof worried now about the raindrops that look like eyes.
