sorry but once you notice how often ppl use a southern accent as shorthand for being unintelligent you can never unsee it. classism is baked so deeply and why are you acting like anyone who talks the way my grandfather talks is stupid.
As someone who has grown up around people with these accents, you get told to lose your accent if you want to be taken seriously in a job. Not only do you get made fun of, well into your adult years, but you also get viewed as less educated.
Once, I was told from someone that they were shocked I didn't have an accent (I do, hers was just much stronger than mine and from further south) and I told her straight out that I try not to have one. Of course it slips when I say certain words or phrases. When it does, I again get made fun of. I get parodied to a racist white farmer or a hillbilly.
I can't use my natural tone of voice in any social situation outside of my family home and family gatherings. Most of them aren't college educated, yeah, but they are all smart and hardworking. Those who don't have the accent are ones who did go to college, are working corporate jobs or at the very least not locally owned places.
And this is something I've been told to do, have been shown to do by my mother, since I was a little kid, back when this accent was forming.
