In Age of X, when Magneto says āthere must be a shrine in some remote corner of your being. A place of sanctity.ā, in that entire speech, and in that moment, that place for him is Legacy. Itās Anna.
Because he didnāt imprison her as his own laws would have asked for; he didnāt kill her in the rubble to secure his fortress. He sheltered her. He preserved that corner of himself. LegacyĀ (her ways and the world seen through her eyes) represents that piece of humanity in him while the rest of his soul is a butcherās shop. He wants to trust her judgement even if her actions are breaking his world apart. He chooses to put his faith in her at the cost of himself and at the cost of the world he fights to keep afloat because he trusts her to be the better part of him.Ā
The story starts with Legacy reminding him of how long they have been fighting for, making him reflect on the meaning of their lives. And by the end of it he comes to terms with how tired he is of that struggle, of surviving just to wake up again and again to the same grey day. So when she exposes the cracks in his fortress he chooses to see the rays of light that are coming through.
Yes, I do love that story - it had so many details written with care and respect.
Carey did a great job with this story, and I hate how Age of X-Man (Why couldn't it have been Age of Nate Grey!) has superseded the original AoX title to claim its name. Ah well...
Great Khaleesi and I were discussing this just last night, how General Magnus treasured Legacy, and how it was returned by her to him. (Or at least in our headcanon) We helped each other form a half-thought each of us had to be made whole.
If General Magnus and Legacy were in a relationship around the edges of the story, or circling one another, it has a memento mori or this idea that their general spends his days fighting their enemies, and his nights appealing to/appeasing/apologizing/atoning to their fallen.
It's the love of death, the cycle of rebirth, the endless ocean of souls and lives within her. It's the Elysian Field of mutants made flesh in a human body. A tontine that doesn't end with death, but instead creates a living history within the body of one person.
Forgive my weakness, but I'd like to also suggest that some of these themes were (lightly) discussed in my first ever completed Fic A Monster Amongst Monsters:
https://archiveofourown.org/works/21245672/chapters/50586248
https://www.fanfiction.net/s/13175288/1/A-Monster-Amongst-Monsters
i loved this arc a lot and am STILL thinking about it and about their dynamic and how theyāre portrayed in white / black respectively, how he calls her his compass and she says she loved himāthe way a warrior knows death is always calling and the way death embraces the ones who know it as a friendāthe way sheās his shadow, has his complete trust to do the things he canāt, as the leader
itās a relationship dynamic i want to sink my teeth into, the revenant and the revered, the priest and the altar and the manufactured deity magnus is all but creating of legacy is delicious. obsessed with him loving her so much he makes her Legacy, eternal, undying, untouchable by mortal hands or time like that man yearns and loves with the most selfish selfless love to make her immortal so she can be a living paradise, his paradise, that he can go to his grave knowing will be undying and everlasting proof of his love for her and i am unwell over it mae
also mae your fics are amazing thank u for the shoutout here š„¹š

had the 'sauron was never meant to have any characterization outside of being evil' argument at work today and it was the quickest way to tell someone a) hadn't read the silmarillion and b) had no concept of character depth or actual personality
'hes just a bad evil eyeball' get a load of this guy! has no idea that when thangorodrim was broken and morgoth overthrown, sauron put on his fair hue again and did obeisance to eönwë, the herald of manwë, and abjured all his evil deeds!! OR that some hold that this was not at first falsely done, but that sauron in truth repented, if only out of fear, being dismayed by the fall of morgoth and the great wrath of the lords of the west!!
welp back at it again with the OC stuff--this time more asoiaf oc stuff WHICH goes back a good bit and in true Khaleesi Fashionā¢ļø i've just tied all my asoia aus with my various ocs together BUT this time i went all in and made this The Version Where House Targaryen Comes From Visenya Via Maegor Instead Of Rhaenys Via Aenys

elinor costayne's child is born a son, and named aerion. the boy maintains several deformities: a malformed and blind left eye, two shriveled, blackened fingers on his left hand, and strange burn-like scars that are blackened and hard, as if the remnants of scales. the maesters spent much of the boy's youth certain he would not live into maturity, however aerion proved heartier than credited and after maegor's death and his own coronation set about repairing things damaged by his father. the rift with house hightower, notably, when he wed lady celyne--who gave him two sons and a daughter. prince viserys, later king viserys i, was aerion's heir as his eldest son, but it became clear into viserys' adulthood that he was plagued with madness, and his rule was one of tumult that had rumors spreading like wildfire of the blood curse of king maegor until viserys' death by fire. accounts of the incident vary; one maester writes that the king was merely embroiled in an unfortunate accident, another septon's text reported that the king had attempted to transform himself into a dragon through the flames--but a court fool by the name of kettlebug swore that it was prince daeron and his dragon who burnt out viserys' madness with dragonfire. regardless of the truth, prince daeron claimed the throne for himself, and he was crowned daeron i, with his wife alyssa lannister. their rule was peaceful and saw much rebuilding of the realm at large until their deaths--at which time their son, errant prince lucerys targaryen, was called home from his wandering in the east, and did return to the red keep to claim the throne for himself and his wife: the daughter of a velaryon dragonrider and the current sealord of braavos, lady shaera.
lucerys and shaera saw the realm through the harshest and longest winter in westerosi history--and when the snows melted again and the spring returned, lucerys i was hailed The Golden Dragon, and lady shaera The Spring Queen. since their rule there have not been two rulers so beloved by the people as they were.
their eldest child, prince laenor, would go on to wed a tyrell lady--songs are still sung of the silver prince and his rose maiden who sailed the skies and never landed: the two were avid and adventurous travelers who flew east one year and disappeared beyond asshai, never to return.
lucerys i and shaera's daughter valaena, however, was....not overfond of men, preferred the company of her ladies, but married corwyn celtigar, who was notorious for his cavorting with both women and men alike, and their children were a shock to everyone. their eldest son became king gaemon i and was a peaceful man, but the next generations of his family would go down in history as one of the bloodiest eras in westeros.
his eldest son, crown prince aemond, had a son and heir with his wife the lady cerelle lannister, who died shortly after prince corbynās birth from complications of her labors. in his travels during his grieving period, the crown prince met a lysene beauty and with her had a daughter: daenerea of lys. so taken was prince aemond with his paramour and their daughter that he named daenerea his trueborn daughter and presented her at courtāwhich caused some amount of whispering that her mother was a sorceress and in later years it would be whispered that daenerea herself had learned the dark arts from her mother.
princes aegor and baelor were the closest of brothers; baelor blue star and aegor, called the āsky walkerā were proficient warriors who attempted to bring dorne to heel but aegor had greater aspirations.
baelorās early marriage to his wife proved fruitless and eventually disintegrated while aegorās young marriage brought forth twinsābut princess daenerea was the favorite, however; in spite of her parentage, she was doted on by her father, her uncle baelor, and her grandfather king gaemon. it was made known among the court that the kingās desire was to see daenerea as queen; however her half-brother corbyn was not high in the kingās favor. just short of naming daenerea heir, he made clear to his council that he would have daenerea sit as queen one day, but after her fatherās death the realm was in uproar. shortly after the king's declaration to the council about his granddaughter, crown prince aemond was struck by a sudden and violent illness, and died. the realm mourned, but daenerea and her uncle baelor began to suspect aegor of treachery, moreso when the youngest prince allied himself with a shadowmancer claiming to give the prince visions of the future.
prince baelor had long stated he had no desire to rule, but when succession fell into question he began to consider his fatherās request to be named heir. in the meantime, prince aegor was the one who brokered a marriage with house stark: favored princess daenerea to the heir of winterfell, lord dorren stark.
daenerea and dorrenās marriage was a happy one, perhaps for the two of them alone. it was rumored that daenereaās first child, a son named gaemon for her grandsire, was not her husbandās but was her uncle baelorās instead. to make worse of the rumors, not long after princess daenerea married dorren stark, prince baelor petitioned to have his own marriage dissolved.
the throne became embroiled in strife when king gaemon died, and no clear heir had been officially declared. aegor had himself coronated following the abrupt deaths of his wife and small children at sea, and as if in strange coincidence daenereaās husband dorren was declared lost beyond the wall during a venture with a group of rangers from the nightās watch. princess daenerea and her children were summoned south by the new king, and upon her arrival to kingās landing the princess was informed she would wed prince aegor, and her young children were taken hostage in the red keep.
ever willful, the princess managed to escape the red keep on her dragon and met with prince baelorāand swiftly the couple claimed dragonstone, were wedded by a septon there, and declared themselves the rightful rulers of the seven kingdoms. while their claim was supported by many of the noble houses, it was daenereaās half brother, prince corbyn, whose support for prince aegor began to cause dissention. during the struggle for the throne, princess daenereaās son jacaerys stark was struck down by his uncle prince corbyn along with his young dragon as they attempted to return north to rally house stark, and the news of his assumed death sparked more outrage among the northern houses, who were sworn to his father and house stark.
daenerea bore baelor two more children on dragonstone, though it was her eldest son gaemon who won he and his sister taellaās freedom from their uncle aegor's grasp, the two flying to dragonstone and then further across the narrow sea to braavos at the urging of their mother.
after years of fighting, prince baelor and his dragon were brought down over the mountains of the moon by prince aegor and his dragonāand shortly after, princess daenerea was captured at dragonstone and put to death by dragonfire by aegor. her two children by prince baelor, princess laena and prince aerion, were taken as hostages to lure their elder brother and sister back from braavos; this worked, however aegor and his forces were overcome when prince gaemon and princess taella returned from braavos with a fleet of ships and soldiers, and demanded the release of their siblings. the young prince and princess were freed into their siblings' custody, but the children of daenerea were exiled to essos, and aegor refused to relinquish the throne.
his rule was tyrannical and bloody, but it was in the end his single act of mercy in sparing the lives of princess daenerea's children that was his downfall: prince gaemon and princess taella had wed one another, but their sister laena brokered her own marriage to lord orys of house baratheon, and her younger brother aerion to lady eliana martell to secure support. what truly turned the tide, however, was house stark and its banners marching south with prince jacaerys stark and his father dorren stark at the lead; jacaerys having survived the attack by prince corbyn while his dragon did not, though the boy managed to find his way north and to winterfell all the same. dorren, who had been lost in the lands beyond the wall, had returned home to find his wife and children gone and the realm at war, and when jacaerys bid him to call the banners and ride south, they did just that.
king aegor's rule was ended when the realm at large rallied against him: gaemon and taella with their essosi army and their dragons from the east, laena with house baratheon's strength from the crownlands, jacaerys and dorren stark with the armies of the north, and aerion with the support of dorne in the south. prince gaemon and princess taella were crowned king and queen of westeros shortly after.
things get a little murky here because i'm still working out this time period of things but a few generations in we get to prince jahaerys and family: jahaerys, daenys, lucerys, naeryssa, baela, and aerea. during their father's rule, westeros saw building strife with pentos and braavos, and princes jahaerys and lucerys were celebrated warriors and dragonriders who set out to bring the narrow sea under the control of the iron throne with the aid of house velaryon and its current head, lord viserys velaryon.
princess daenys, lord viserys' wife, was robbed of her husband during the fighting; the driftwood throne fell to viserys' brother corlys, who wedded daenys in his brother's stead as the pair had only produced a daughter and not a viable heir: lady vaelora velaryon.
vaelora was lauded as a great beauty: waves of silver-white hair and blue-violet eyes, it was rumored that she was kept on driftmark so that she would not be stolen away. when the king's death marked prince jahaerys as the new king, however, lady vaelora was called forth from high tide. prince jahaerys had been married to viserra velaryon for some years, and while there was great love between them, lady viserra's already weak health only grew weaker with her failed pregnancies, and when jahaerys was named king, only months later did queen viserra die during another failed labor. king jahaerys was grief-stricken by her death and swore he would never take another wife, and named his brother lucerys his heir in place of a son.
lucerys became prince of dragonstone, and while his twin sister naeryssa had born a son between them, the pair had married out of necessity rather than love. naeryssa remained in the red keep with their son daeron while lucerys lived on dragonstone, and it was not long before an engagement was decided upon between his son daeron and lady vaelora.
accounts of this time are...weak, and mostly unreliable, but it is rumored that prince lucerys became deeply enamored of lady vaelora in spite of her engagement to his son, and that the two began an affair in secret during her marriage to prince daeron; some sources go so far as to say princess vaelora's children were not prince daeron's at all, but were in fact sired by his father, lucerys. very little proof of any merit has been produced to back such claims, but there are dozens of accounts of servants, maesters, septons, and smallfolk that swear lucerys and vaelora were secretly in love, and that it was lucerys who fathered each of vaelora's children. even more radical accounts suggest that two of the princess' miscarriages were not miscarriages at all, but rather that the illicit pair had been performing ancient valyrian blood magic, and that the princess had given birth to dragon eggs rather than living children. such claims are sensational and would be better left lost to the ages, however it is worth noting the sheer volume of said claims that all bear some resemblance to one another. it is strange indeed that so many varied accounts would retain such similarity, even more so given the bizarre subject matter.

anyways i'm still working on all of this and i have. literally like volumes of junk jotted down about so many members of this bloodline now because i'm, idk, just absolutely deranged i guess : ) buuuut if anyone's interested in hearing about any of them feel free to ask
i have some halloween stuff iām working on buuuut i also ended up doing a big thinktank thing on my Massive ASOIAF AU and these two got an overhaul
so this is vaelora velaryon and lucerys II targaryenāi have. almost an entire family tree for them but these two are incredibly messy and unhinged and obsessed with each other. if you recall some of the other asoiaf au posts she was a tyrell before but recent events have beenā¦.eventingā¦.and now these are them : o ) iāll probably post some stuff about them over on my main so if ur into that head over to @binarysvnrise š
god i have so much information to dump about these two and the huge au they fit into BUT sheās his niece and they are obsessed with each other. theyāre actuallyā¦..both married alreadyā¦.but do not plan on letting that stop them š«£š¦ theyāre both also obsessed with ancient valyrian traditions and vaela ends up getting into old valyrian magic rituals she finds in old scrolls in the targaryen archives so theyāre in a lot of ways this meme:

oooo a comic about the blorbos--time for some exposition !!
so this is thranduil and elowen; i've talked about them before briefly but this comic was something i got into my head and had to get out--between the breaking of their courtship and thranduil seeing her again, 2,948 years have passed. during that time, thranduil became king of the green wood, married, and became a father before losing his wife. i've mentioned her briefly before, but her name is celien, and she's the sister of celeborn and galathil and a longtime friend of elowen's who came to the green wood with elowen and their friends fainien and coivitar in the first place.
elowen took part in the war of the last alliance as a healer, but after the battle of dagorlad and the losses suffered there, one particularly traumatizing experience changes elowen a great deal and post-war, she remains in lothlorien with her mother, not straying from the forest for a good long while until galadriel requests that she travel to the greatwood to assess what she can of the damage the darkness has done and try to heal some of the forest if she is able, since the land and the trees there know her. at that point, she and thranduil see one another again for the first time in centuries, and realize maybe they do in fact still remember what it feels like to be in love š„ŗ
