Thunderbolts (2016), No. 7 Variant Cover by Marco Checchetto
a Marvel Trumps Hate ( @marveltrumpshate ) 2021 commission created with embroidery floss, watercolors, fabric, and fine glitter paint on aida cloth in a 10" bamboo hoop frame
A lot of life happened between the commission date and now, but I'm very proud of how this turned out, and I know that 2021 Rebecca wouldn't have been able to create this, so the time was worth it. (No offense 2021 Rebecca, we've just grown as an artist.)

āWOW IM SO GLAD MY DOCTOR TOLD ME ABOUT THISā SAID NONE OF US EVER
[Image: Screencap from the above website; you can click through to read the whole thing, but Iām going to copy-paste this same bit because it answers so many questions in my life - mostly related to āWhy am I crying about this?ā]
Rejection sensitive dysphoria (RSD) is an extreme emotional sensitivity and emotional pain triggered by the perception ā not necessarily the reality ā that a person has been rejected, teased, or criticized by important people in their life. RSD may also be triggered by a sense of failure, or falling short ā failing to meet either their own high standards or othersā expectations.
Dysphoria is Greek for ādifficult to bear.ā Itās not that people with ADHD are wimps, or weak; itās that the emotional response hurts them much more than it does people without the condition.
When this emotional response is internalized, it can imitate full, major depression complete with suicidal ideation. The sudden change from feeling perfectly fine to feeling depressed that results from RSD is often misdiagnosed as rapid cycling bipolar disorder.
It can take a long time for physicians to recognize that these symptoms are caused by the sudden emotional changes associated with ADHD and rejection sensitivity, while all other object relations are totally normal.
When this emotional response is externalized, it looks like an impressive, instantaneous rage at the person or situation responsible for causing the pain. 50% of people who are assigned court-mandated anger-management treatment have previously unrecognized ADHD.
Capslock translation from above: āWow Im so glad my doctor told me about thisā said none of us ever
One more reblog for the road. Iāve seen at least eight people go āThereās a name for this?ā as a result of sharing this link, and I want to try and reach even more. Itās so meaningful to me to know that thereās something going on, and that itās not just me being inadequate at dealing with my emotions. When you consider the level of horror I feel over even minor screwups, my reactions are completely understandable. My feelings are valid.
For anyone else out there who cries over spilled milk, or at the drop of a hat? This might be worth a read.
This is your irregular reminder that Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria Is A (terrible, horrible, no good, very bad) Thing.
Alternately, this is your notice that Thereās A Name For That Horrible Experience.
Support to all of my fellow ADHD-ers out there; RSD is made of terrible.
Oh look, it me.
I have ADHD and BPD and this is so relatable

The thing about knitting is itās much harder to fear the existential futility of all your actions while youāre doing it.
Like ok, sure, sometimes itās hard to believe youāve made any positive impact on the world. But itās pretty easy to believe youāve made a sock. Look at it. There it is. Put it on, now your footās warm.
Checkmate, nihilism.
This is a powerful positive message..
Iām literally reading a book right now (Burnout by Emily and Amelia Nagoski) that says this is scientifically sound.
There have been studies done on rats and dogs where they develop learned helplessness in the animals by giving them impossible tasks. Eventually the animals stop trying, even when the task stops being impossible. (I.e. put a rat in a maze with cheese it canāt get to until it develops learned helplessness, then put the cheese somewhere it canĀ get to it and it wonāt even try.) But once they show the animals they CAN do something - i.e. physically moving the rat to the cheese - the learned helplessness goes away.
No one can move you to your cheese for you, but the book says DOING something - which they define asĀ āanything that isnāt nothingā can help. Make a food. Work in the garden. Clean a thing. Do a favor for a friend. Call your elected officials.
Knit a sock.
If you feel overwhelmed by existential despair, do something. It doesnāt have to be big. It just has to be anything that isnāt nothing.
This is really good advice for ADHD people because when executive dysfunction gets bad itās easy to fall into this pattern of thinking. Do just one thing. It doesnāt have to be your homework, or a chore. It can be something small, it can be something you enjoy. But do just one thing to remind yourself that you can.
This is what āhumans want to be productiveā really means
We want to make things. We want to do something and at the end of the process see that something has changed. We want physical proof that we did something. We want to be able to point at something and say āI made thisā. We want to be creators
