アドベントカレンダー企画、参加させていただきありがとうございます！ せっかくなので紹介したい物に縁のある日を担当したいな～と思いまして、12月2日を選びました。

本日2023年1975年12月2日にコミックスの“The Invaders #5” が発売されてから48年です。 ※コミックスには1976年3月と書かれていますが、これは3月号という意味であり、実際に刊行されたのは1975年12月になります。 ※アメコミの話数は“#”で数えます。“#5”は｢第5話｣という意味です。日本のコミックファンは単に｢5｣と呼ぶことが多いです。

というわけで今日は、私の推しチーム並びに推しコミックス・シリーズである、“The Invaders”（以下インベーダーズと表記）を紹介します！

■インベーダーズとは？ インベーダーズとは、ヒーローたちで結成されたチームです。アベンジャーズみたいなものと思っていただければOKです。 第二次世界大戦中（1941年～）を舞台に、連合国（米英）側の立場で、枢軸国（日独伊/コミックス中では主にナチス）と戦うヒーローチームです。 戦争のアメコミというと暗い話なのでは？と思われるかもなのですが、実際読んだ印象で言うと、若いヒーローたちが枢軸国のスーパーヴィランたちを相手に立ち回る、華やかで楽しいヒーロー漫画です。 ヒーローたちも若くて血気盛んなので、仲間同士で喧嘩になったりと、ドタバタ物の要素もあって面白く読めます。 また、戦時中を舞台にしたストーリーだけでなく、現代でもたびたび再結成され、戦時中の出来事に端を発する事件を解決したりしています。（最新作は2019年/初登場から50周年記念で出たもの） インベーダーズのメンバーは、古い世代のアメリカ人からしたら「戦争の英雄」であり、またメンバー同士の関係性は「戦争を経験した戦友」という表現がしっくり来ます。 彼らには、単に仲良しの友人以上の、「戦友」としての絆を感じます。

ちなみに、インベーダーズの決め台詞は “Okay,Axis,Here we come!”（さあ、枢軸よ…今行くぞ！） です。 かっこいいんだけど、枢軸国と戦っていた戦時中以外には応用が利かないので、現代のストーリーではめったに使われないように思います。(笑)

｢インベーダー｣というと、｢インベーダーゲーム｣を連想するのではないでしょうか。 ｢インベーダー｣とは直訳すると｢侵略者｣です。 Invade には｢侵略｣｢侵攻｣という意味があり、｢ナチスが牛耳っているヨーロッパの戦線に『侵攻』する｣という意味で、イギリスのチャーチル首相に｢インベーダーズ｣と名付けられました。 チームメンバーの間では｢別の名前でも良いんじゃない？｣と話し合いが行われたこともあるのですが、バラバラの意見が収集つかず喧嘩になりかけたので（笑）、そのまま｢インベーダーズ｣と名乗ることになりました。 ※｢アベンジャー｣も｢復讐者（正義のための仇討ち的な意味合い）｣だし、マーベルのヒーローチーム名ってわりと物騒なのあるよなと思う。

■インベーダーズと｢後付け｣設定 インベーダーズというチームそのものがコミックスに初登場したのは1969年、｢インベーダーズ｣の単独コミックスがスタートしたのは1975年からとなります。 50年以上前からあるヒーローチームです。 1940年代を舞台にしたストーリーですが、1975年に描かれたコミックスであるため、リアル戦時中のプロパガンダ的な要素はなく、むしろ米軍の在米日本人に対する扱いに疑問を呈する話など、戦後の価値観で描かれた話であることが分かります。（日系アメリカ人のキャラもインベーダーズのサブメンバーとして出てきます！） ほとんどのチームメンバーは、実際に1940年代にコミックスが刊行されていたヒーローたちです。なお、1940年代のコミックスでは、｢インベーダーズ｣というチームは結成されていません。（インベーダーズのメンバーを含めた当時のヒーローたちが1946年に共闘する話はあり、その際のチームは“All-winners Squad”（オール・ウィナーズ・スクワッド）と言います。/すごくプロパガンダ的な名前！笑） つまりインベーダーズは、いわゆる｢後付け設定｣のチームです。

ライターのロイ・トーマスは1940年生まれで、幼い頃から熱心なコミックスファンでした。彼が大人になりコミックライター・編集者の仕事に就き、1970年代に、自分が子供の頃から大好きな1940年代のコミックスのキャラクターを活躍させるコミックスを書いたということは想像に難くありません。 ※マーベルコミックスのキャラクターの版権は出版社に帰属しているため、キャラクターを作った作家でなくても、キャラクターを使い、コミックスのシリーズを書くことができます。

1940年代（コミックスの勃興期／ゴールデン・エイジ）のキャラクターたちは、荒唐無稽なデザイン・設定だったり、当時の社会を反映した価値観で描かれたコミックスだったりと、現代の読者が読んで素直に｢かっこいい｣と受け入れることが難しいものもあります。 出版社は古いキャラクターのコミックスを出し続けることができますが、追加設定・時には後付け設定を加えて、現代の読者にもそのキャラクターの魅力を感じてもらうことは、とても重要なことであると思います。 特に、本当にそのキャラクターのことが大好きな｢オタク｣で、手腕のあるライターが描く｢後付け設定｣は、ファンでも｢そうきたか！｣と唸るような見事な物も多く、楽しいです。 ※読者も過去のコミックスを愛しているオタクたちだけど、そのファンを納得させ、ワクワクさせる話を作れるライターや編集者達は、ファンを上回る相当なオタクってことなんだろうな……と思う。オタクのライターは信用できる(笑) ※なお、その｢後付け設定｣が不評だったらしれっと無かったことになる、｢売れるかどうかがすべて｣の基盤を含めて、個人的には結構安心感がある(笑)

■インベーダーズのメンバー紹介 ここからは主なチームメンバーの紹介をします！

・キャプテン・アメリカ（スティーブ・ロジャース）

超人血清を摂取してスーパーパワーを得たスーパーソルジャー。 統率力があり、インベーダーズのリーダー的役割を果たす。 金髪に青い瞳。 1920年生まれ。1941年時点では21歳。

・バッキー・バーンズ（ジェームズ・ブキャナン・バーンズ）

キャプテン・アメリカのサイドキック（ヒーローの相棒キャラ）の少年。 米軍に入りスティーブと意気投合して親友となった。コミックスではスティーブの弟分的な立ち位置。 第二次大戦時点ではスーパーパワーは持っておらず、優れた身体能力で戦う。 ブラウンの髪にブラウンの瞳。 1925年生まれ。1941年時点では16歳。

・ヒューマン・トーチ（ジム・ハモンド）

発火能力を持ち、飛行能力もあるアンドロイド。アンドロイドだが人間そっくりの外見で、青年の姿をしている。 金髪に青い瞳。 穏やかだが頑固なところもある性格で、自分が人間ではないことに悩んでいる。 1939年生まれ。1941年時点では2歳。(！) ※ファンタスティック・フォーのメンバーであるヒューマン・トーチ（ジョニー・ストーム）とは別人。ジムの方が初代で、区別のため“The Original Human Torch”（初代ヒューマン・トーチ）と呼ばれることもあります。

・トロ（トーマス・レイモンド）

ヒューマン・トーチのサイドキックの少年。 トーチと同じく発火能力・飛行能力を持つ。 両親が事故で亡くなり、サーカスで働いていたところをジムに引き取られた。ジムのことを｢パピー｣と呼んでいて、親子のような関係。 黒髪に青い瞳。 インベーダーズの中では同年代のバッキーと仲良し。 1924年生まれ。1941年時点では17歳。

・サブマリナー（ネイモア・マッケンジー）

海底にある王国、アトランティスの王子。（この時点ではまだ王位に就いていない） アトランティス人の母親と、地上人の父親の間に生まれたハーフ。 水中でも陸上でも呼吸ができ、水中では特に高い戦闘力を持つほか、飛行能力も持っている。 第二次大戦中、アトランティスもナチスの侵攻を受けており、連合国側と利害が一致するためチームに参加した。 黒髪に青い瞳（アートによってはグリーン）。 1920年生まれ。1941年時点では21歳。

・ユニオン・ジャック

イギリスの貴族の家系｢ファルスワース家｣のヒーロー。インベーダーズがイギリスに行った時に出会った。スーパーパワーは持たず、優れた身体能力で戦うヒーロー。 三代いる。（三人とも同じデザインのコスチューム）

→初代ユニオン・ジャック（ジェームズ・モンゴメリー・ファルスワース） 第一次世界大戦で活躍したヒーロー。 インベーダーズの作中で登場した時にはすでに伝説のヒーローで、老人となっている。 シルバーの髪に青い瞳。（若い頃は黒髪）

→二代目ユニオン・ジャック（ブライアン・ファルスワース） 初代ユニオン・ジャックの息子。 デストロイヤーというヒーローと恋仲で、マーベルの作中の歴史上、現在判明している中では最も古いゲイのスーパーヒーロー。 ブラウンの髪にブラウンの瞳。

→三代目ユニオン・ジャック（ジョセフ・チャップマン） 1980年のコミックスでユニオン・ジャックを襲名する。 現代のインベーダーズのストーリーで登場するユニオン・ジャックはこの三代目。 初代ユニオン・ジャックの孫（後述するスピット・ファイアの息子）の友人（ファルスワース家と関係ない他人／！）が、友人の家であるファルスワース家を訪れた際、事件に巻き込まれ勇敢に戦ったことをきっかけに、ユニオン・ジャックの名を継ぐことになった。 スーパーパワーは持っておらず、優れた身体能力で戦う。 ストロベリーブロンド（金髪＋赤毛）の髪に青い瞳。

・スピット・ファイア（ジャクリーン・ファルスワース）

初代ユニオン・ジャックの娘で、二代目ユニオン・ジャックの妹。 高速で移動できるスーパーパワーを手に入れた。 1970年代のインベーダーズのコミックスでは、ブライアンとジャクリーンが兄妹でチームに参加する。 金髪に青い瞳。

■インベーダーズの好きエピソード インベーダーズのコミックスのエピソードをいくつか紹介します。

【アンドロイドの初恋！？】 アンドロイドであるジムは、イギリスで出会ったジャクリーンにひと目惚れ！ しかし彼は自分が人間ではないことに負い目を感じており、ジャクリーンに素直に接することができません。 そうとは知らないジャクリーンは、ジムがインベーダーズのメンバーであることを知り、インベーダーズ全員を邸宅（英国貴族のファルスワース家）に招待します。 晩餐会に招かれるインベーダーズですが、ジムは元気がありません。 ジャクリーンは、有名なヒーローであるキャプテン・アメリカに無邪気に話しかけるのですが、その様子を見てジムは「彼女はきっとスティーブに恋をしたんだ！なぜならスティーブは僕と違って人間だからな！」と勘違い。スティーブに対して勝手に対抗心を抱き、その後もいろいろとトラブルがあり、拗ねて最終的にチームから出て行ってしまいます。（まあそのあと戻ってくるけどね） 別の機会にネイモアが、ファルスワース家のクリスマスパーティーに招待され、バッキーとトロが「ネイモアはクリスマスに興味ないと思っていたけど、パーティーに行くの？」と問いかけた際、ネイモアは「ファルスワース家で饗される食事は美味である。それに、ジムがジャクリーン嬢を見てどぎまぎする様子を眺めるのが面白いのだ。」と言って、にやりと笑いながらパーティーに出かけるシーンがあります。周囲のメンバーはみんなジムのことを分かっているけど、あえて何も言わずに眺めている感じが可愛くて好きです。 ジムは大人の姿だけどまだ生まれて2年だからね……。 なお、ジムはジャクリーンとは結ばれません……（涙）。 (The Invaders(1975) #8-12, Winter Soldier: Winter Kills(2006) #1)

【レッド・スカル登場！】 48年前の12月2日に発売の“The Invaders #5” では、キャプテン・アメリカの敵として有名なレッド・スカルが登場。バッキーを除くインベーダーズのメンバーは、レッド・スカルに捕まり、洗脳されてしまいます。 一人残されたバッキーが、他のヒーローたち（リバティ・リージョンというヒーローチーム）に呼びかけ、協力を取り付けて戦います。バッキーはキャップのサイドキックで、普段は子供と思われがちなキャラクターですが、彼の呼びかけで他のヒーローたちが動く展開はアツいです。 リバティ・リージョンの活躍回は他誌（マーベル・プレミア）とインベーダーズ誌を行き来する形で展開されており、インベーダーズのコラボ回であると言えます。 (The Invaders(1975) #5-6, Marvel Premiere(1972) #29-30)

I mean, it's been a while since I reread Young Avengers, but from what I remember, it always scares me how Tommy's story is the most traumatic of the group and everyone treats it as if it's nothing (?).

Excuse me?

Since when is Tommy Shepherd not hard-edged? And since when is he not as ‘hard-edged’ as Loki or Noh-Varr. Sure, Miss America is badass, but Loki spends half his time talking about 'smooching’ or making jokes about breakfast (yes, I know the events of JiM, but the Loki that’s being portrayed is still acting like a little kid), and Noh-Varr’s personality is so absent and inconsistent that you can literally put him in any situation and he’s fine. You can’t tell me that the YA Noh-Varr is the same as Marvel Boy Noh, or Civil War Noh. (The same guy who burned “Fuck you” into the city is not the same one that dances and worries if Kate noticed how badass he was. Alternate universe, whatever, that’s not the same character.)

1. Tommy Shepherd is not a sociopath. He’s nowhere close. The use of the word Sociopath instead of Psychopath indicates that his emotional problems come from his environment instead of internal factors. But! Sociopath/psychopath are just pop-psych words for something called Anti-Social Personality Disorder, Mr. Gillen, and I’m gonna list the symptoms for you, with personal commentary in bold:

A) There is a pervasive pattern of disregard for and violation of the rights of others occurring since age 15 years, as indicated by three or more of the following:

1.      failure to conform to social norms with respect to lawful behaviors as indicated by repeatedly performing acts that are grounds for arrest; (No. Unless you count accidentally blowing up his school, which was an accident, like every other mutant ever who accidentally hurt someone when they found out about their powers. Mutant powers aren’t harmless, and we have proof that he didn’t hurt anyone. Because if he had, I guarantee you the Vision would have mentioned it. Even if you have limited space, that is something that gets mentioned right off the bat. Accidental use of powers is not the same as intentionally disregarding rules and rights of others.)

2.      deception, as indicated by repeatedly lying, use of aliases, or conning others for personal profit or pleasure; (I’ve never seen this. I’ve seen him be a bit of a jerk, I’ve seen him be a total sweetheart, but I’ve never seen a pattern of lying. The only alias he has is Speed.)

3.      impulsivity or failure to plan ahead; (Nope. He plans ahead just fine. Works for a few minutes to build up enough money to travel for a while? That sounds like a pretty well thought out plan to me.)

4.      irritability and aggressiveness, as indicated by repeated physical fights or assaults; (Superhero. Fights come with the territory. And he hardly ever picks fights. He makes smartass comments, but even times he could pick a fight, he doesn’t. (he could have argued with Billy when he called him a sociopath in CC, but he didn’t. There’s a lot of times he could have picked a fight, and the very fact that he hasn’t is incredibly telling. HE WAS TRAINED TO BE A LIVING WEAPON, AND HE HAS NOT BECOME ONE. That, more than anything else, should tell you about Tommy Shepherd’s character. He took on the 'don’t kill’ rule with little argument, and he hasn’t ever looked back.)

5.      reckless disregard for safety of self or others; (I read him as reckless because of what he went through, but not for the safety of others. He spent the entirety of Siege making sure that everyone got out safely, and nearly broke down when he couldn’t help everyone. Those aren’t the actions of someone who doesn’t care.)

6.      consistent irresponsibility, as indicated by repeated failure to sustain consistent work behavior or honor financial obligations; (Again, no. He maintains his work perfectly well. He gets his own money and travels, and then comes back. He does it consistently. He also always shows up when he’s needed, and never, ever backs down from doing what needs to be done, even when he’s injured.)

7.      lack of remorse, as indicated by being indifferent to or rationalizing having hurt, mistreated, or stolen from another; (The only time we ever see anything similar is when he first gets out, and attacks the doctors/scientists. But he had been experimented on for god knows how long, and then immediatelybacks down when the YA tell him to stop. And as far as we know, he’s never hurt or mistreat anyone, or stolen. He plays with Molly for gods sake, the only delinquent thing we see him do is take Kate out for drinks. And try and give me a scene where Tommy isn’t remorseful, even if he hadn’t done anything wrong. He even stands up to the X-Men to defend Wanda in CC, even though he had never met the woman before. Those are not the actions of someone who is ok with people being mistreated or hurt.)

B) The individual is at least age 18 years. (I’ll give you this one.)

C) There is evidence of conduct disorder with onset before age 15 years. (there is no evidence presented in the comics, beyond the fact that he accidentally blew up his school. See earlier rant about accidentally stumbling upon powers. (Hell, even Billy hurt someone when he first found out about his powers, and Teddy impersonated everyone under the sun, and Eli lied about his powers and used drugs, and Cassie goes behind her parents backs and even stole dangerous chemicals from her father when she was young, and Nate goes time hopping even though it fucks with the continuum to the point where it nearly destroys the world. Please explain to me how Tommy is the least remorseful or honest of the group?)

D) The occurrence of antisocial behavior is not exclusively during the course of schizophrenia or a manic episode. (Unless you count him going really fast as a manic episode, which I don’t, then no, but then again THERE IS NO OCCURRENCE OF ANTISOCIAL BEHAVIOR.)

Now, those parameters are directly out of the most recent edition of the DSM (The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. Which I have right here, as I am a student of both psychology and criminology.)

With that, I just want to say that Tommy has absolutely none of the characteristics of a sociopath.

NOW! I do understand the idea that some people can hide their more anti-social traits, which is how a lot of CEO’s get to the positions they’re in, but that is not the case here. A sociopath simply would not become a hero, or be part of a superhero team. They wouldn’t abide by a 'no killing’ rule, and there would be some kind of indication that they are not capable of the same emotional range as 'normal’ people. Tommy has a wide and varied range of emotions, and I will provide photographic evidence if needed.

As far as Tommy not having a place in the YA, I honestly can’t believe that. Tommy was the only character that didn’t give up immediately after CC, and yes, Kate also went back to hero-ing in the Hawkeye comics, and Teddy eventually did as well, but Tommy was the only one who never thought they would actually stop being heroes. I’m not saying that he’s the most hopeful person, but he does serve a function as a character. Aside from his powerset, which is incredibly helpful in disarming, surveillance, and blowing things up (and according to Heinburg, he’s as powerful as Billy. He can control atoms. How is that not a useful power? With a little bit of creativity, he can do just about anything, if he was trained a little bit. One reality warper chaos magic user is fine, but atomic control is not a useful powerset? Especially when combined with superspeed that has been shown to outstrip Pietro’s.)

Aside from his abilities, if his character was developed just a little bit, he would have a wonderful perspective on heroes and what they do. He had been stuck in an experimentation facility, and the only people who ever bothered to check out what was happening was a group of kids who were willing to take a chance on him. Plus the fact that he learned a few things in the facility/juvie, and he would have a very different idea of crime and criminals than Billy, who grew up comfortably middle to upper middle class, or any of the other characters, who are shown to be well off. The only exception might be Eli, but at the same time, he has a strong family structure, which makes it much less likely for him to have rubbed shoulders with criminals, as stronger familial ties lead to less street crime.  Tommy didn’t have this, and has spent time in juvie, which does give him experience with this criminal element.

A perspective on heroes from a kid who was never saved by them, and a view of criminals from a hero who understands them? That sounds amazing, and I would love to see more of that.

Tommy has been consistently underappreciated, and shoved into the background, and I know every single fan of Tommy Shepherd would love to see that changed. He’s not a sociopath, and he’s not a useless member of the team, he’s just been underrated. I don’t think that deserves getting kicked off the team; I think it’s a great chance to write some interesting character and character development. Even if he does leave for this run, disregarding him permanently is a terrible idea.
