🎶 “The Self (Social Psychology Version)”
(to the tune of “Anti-Hero” by Taylor )
(lyrics rewritten for academic purposes, charot)
PLEASE SING WITH ME!!! (ang di mo kanta bahog baba) 🙅🏻♀️
I wake up feeling like the world is watching me,
Spotlight effect says: “Girl, center of the scene.”
Nagkamali kog step, murag tanan kita,
But social psych says: “Relax, busy ra sila sa ila.”
I look in mirrors made of other people’s eyes,
Looking-glass self, unsay tan-aw nila sa akoa life?
One raised eyebrow and my confidence drops low,
Grabe kaayo ko mo-assume, pero sila wala kabalo.
It’s me, hi, I’m the self, it’s me,
Comparing my life to people I don’t even know personally.
At night, I scroll, my self-esteem cries softly,
“Social comparison again? Ayaw na beh, please.”
Who am I? Depends kung kinsa akong kuyog,
Sa barkada loud, sa klase murag ghost mode.
Self-concept changing like outfits every day,
Different roles, same me… I think? Okay.
From a collectivist heart, I think “unsay tan-aw nila?”
Before “unsay gusto nako?”, culture got me like that.
Individualism says, “Choose yourself today,”
Collectivism whispers, “Ayaw kaayo, uy, please lang.”
It’s me, hi, I’m the self, again,
Motivated when praised, but one threat and I bend.
Self-esteem shaky but I still pretend,
“That didn’t hurt”, charot, hurt gyud siya, my friend.
Threats make me stronger… or make me overthink,
Depends sa adlaw, depends sa self-esteem tank.
But motivation grows when I choose to try,
Social psychology said: “You’re human, that’s why.”
It’s me, hi, I’m the self in a social world,
Shaped by culture, feedback, and comments hurled.
Not fixed, not perfect, but learning slowly,
Salamat, social psych, for explaining… me.
This song taught me that the self is not created alone.
It is formed in interaction, comparison, and reflection.
And honestly? That makes me feel less alone.
