Idealists

Ayato — And almost delusionally so. Both the expectations that he feels pressured to embody and his hope of constant attention and approval from others are ideals of if only, but he clings to them desperately nonetheless.

Kanato — Lost in mental fairytales and fantasies of the way he wants the world to be, Kanato can’t tolerate anything that disturbs his delusions. Reality is too bitter, too ugly, and too painful.

Laito — It’s in a very warped sense (and he's very much in denial that he's doing it at all), but Laito filters everything through his specific, trauma-shaped ideals. The world has to be a certain way, or else he’s the one who’s broken and wrong.

Kou — His system of give-and-take is a self-invented ideal designed to cope with a reality that was otherwise too painful to bear. Also deeply in denial that his reality is anything but the objective truth.

Azusa — His insistent perception of everyone as either someone who takes pleasure in hurting others or being hurt lands him squarely on the side of "unrealistic". And determinedly so, at that.

Shin — First Bloods should be the superior race. His brother should be an unparalleled image of perfect strength that Shin himself should also be able to someday surpass. There's a lot of "should be" for this one...

Realists

Shuu — Thoroughly grounded in the misery of reality, for better or for worse. No matter how hard he tries to escape the unfortunate facts of his existence, he can’t look away from what’s crushing him.

Reiji — Logic and fact provide a safe space from the uncertain, imperfect failings of human nature. However, the same realities that ground him drive him into mental spirals of envy and rage.

Subaru — Although the facts of life as he sees them are cause for despair, that’s just reality, isn’t it? Fucked up, awful reality that he has no choice but to accept, and suffer because of it.

Kino — Reality is an objective, unarguable fact, and he's going to take advantage of every weak point and loophole he can find in it. Realistic in the sense that he has to know the rules to most effectively break them.

Ruki — Got knocked straight into the realist category when his life and family fortune fell apart around him. A logical and grounded outlook makes him feel more in control of his situation, like he's smart enough to accept the world as it is and still manage to survive.

Yuuma — As down-to-earth as his vegetable plots, Yuuma is good at accepting things as they are. He may not like the facts of life that are put in front of him, but he can at least bear their weight.
