Now that I think about it there's something in show Alicent is hated for giving up on her sons and agreeing to their deaths but the message about Alicent in the book can lowkey be that she caused her son's deaths to satisfy her own ambitions.
Something something *to crown her is to kill her*. She's credited for being as openly hostile to Rhaenyra as possible, for starting this conflict by symbolically declaring war. For letting her husband's body rot so her ambitions to see her kids on the throne would be fullfilled. How do you not read her book end as her regreting what she did & feeling that her actions got her children killed ? The "Green Queen" got her family killed. She crowned them & she killed them.
[Specifically Alicent crowning Helaena as a detail the narrative insists on...the resonance man + "I was happier before I was queen" the show adds]
And well that's also how you know that "this lady's ambition is so cool" just isn't what F&B is giving you with Alicent. It's very if she had stayed in her place none of that stuff would have happened. Alicent's Ambition Bad.
Ulf is kind a nothing character so far but I think he’s over hated and that Silverwing choosing him is very sweet. People just hate him because he has the gall but not the name or accent or raised by arrogant lords swagger to back it up
I think it’s genuinely so awesome that the buildup to their defection is like largely implicit so far like no one is questioning why Daemon is smacking the shit out of them and saying they’re stupid peasants unworthy of thinking or why they aren’t really receiving anything for their service except Ulf. Who is right to ask this question!
If you give peasants the thing that you say puts you above them and gives you divine right of conquest you have to treat them like they’re not peasants. But largely the Targaryens are treating it like they still own the dragons and the dragonseeds are just jockeys. I’m sure that’ll work out for them later just fine :)
So many people who believe straight up in the concept of rightful kings and queens and implicitly in the hierarchy of Westeros are going to be totally winded & outraged by the dragonseeds plot I think.
They're making the best out of the unfortunate cutting of Nettles. The book kind of just delieneated between loyal & disloyal dragonseeds (Nettles + Addam // Ulf + Hugh), which is not nearly as cutting as what it might be they're doing in HotD. The book is very "the good ones stayed in their place & expected nothing more than to serve (they were mistakenly labeled traitors), while the bad ones thought too highly of themselves & wanted what wasn't theirs to want, these gross peasants !"
An asoiaf core adaptation of the dance would obviously rework these characters around those notion of loyalty & betrayal between monarchy & smallfolk, between lowborn dragonseeds bastards & legitimate highborn dragonlords.

In the book, whose “fault” is it? Why?
The first mention of a lot of these characters is actually in a feast for crows and a dance with dragons in the main series. What are those books trying to communicate about war and history thematically and why would they reach back to the dance to do so?
What changes NEED to be made to take something from a collection of contradicting histories in text to a television show? What changes SHOULD be made?
Is house of the dragon trying to tell the same story thematically? How does it engage with the concept of history?
How is it different? What do you think the show wants to be about?
Do the differences successfully tell a different story? Does it come together?
In the show, whose “fault” is it? Why?
What gets lost when an adaptation changes the meaning? What could be gained?
How do you tell a story about the experiences of women in patriarchy without engaging in sexism?

Admitedly I still don't know what to think of the eh, interpretation of Jeyne Arryn's character in HotD. Jeyne "We women must band together" Arryn turned into Jeyne "I hate everyone but especially you, Rhaena" Arryn is quite something

Anyway, I loved it. Maybe it makes me a heretic of the worst kind that you would burn at the stake & send to hell but this Rhaena & Sheepstealer storyline is starting very nicely, I loved that aspect of the battle.
