toward the sun, from the sun
all in a days work (x)
Contemporary art haters will be like "i don't get it" and then not read the title or artist statement or the medium or the year or
waaaay back when I was a cashier in retail we would talk about dumb shit while unloading the truck, and we got to the "what would you do in a zombie apocalypse" me and another worker were like yeah we would just die. End it all, we can't fight or run or shit. I refuse to put that much effort into survival.
And my manager was like no!!!! If that happened, I would drive to find you guys in my truck and we could eat stuff from my wife's garden and I would make sure everyone I know survived!! I would carry you all on my shoulders away from the zombies!!
Anyway, random shout out to that guy. You were too kind for retail management, Devin.
also afterwards everyone who was talking about their cool bunker fantasies were like "Damn, Devin's right, we should also be considering helping people around us." which is the only recorded instance of a retail shift making people better human beings.

Restoration of the Church in honor of the Icon of the Mother of God "Joy of All Who Sorrow" [Info in Russian]
cellar spiders
when I was in high school I had a literature teacher who had a policy of unlimited extra credit. All you had to do was read a book by a notable author (his discretion) and have a little chat with him after school to prove that you read it. No limits, no need for variety (one month I decided I really loved Kurt Vonnegut and just read everything of his I could get my hands on).
Yes, I was tearing through books constantly, and talking to this teacher at least weekly. Because even though I always loved reading as a kid, literature was always a very weak subject for me in terms of a teaching-to-standardized-test school setting (I just do awful on "what color were the curtains" type multiple choice questions. Those details don't stick in my memory THEY JUST DON'T). But that didn't matter for this class. I could just read my way out of any bad test score. I have always had fond memories of how I "fudged" my way through that class and "abused' the extra credit policy.
I was thinking about it again today, and only just now realized that he absolutely tricked me into being well-read, while my teenage self thought I was totally getting away with something. THAT MOTHERFUCKER. I hope he's doing well.

havent drawn a self portrait in a while
I love when someone is explaining instructions to a group I’m in and they look at me and it reminds them to say something about using preferred names/pronouns or that there’s vegan food options available. I go by my given name/pronouns and I’m not vegan but I’m proud that I can provide this service
it is my honor
Happy isopride!
New banner for this month (and maybe forever if it sticks)
Wanted to show off the amazing color diversity of isopods! All of these are cropped images of isopods, with little to no color adjustments. (I can list all the species I used if you’d be interested! And try to find the original image sources again..)
Image breakdown time! Apologies that many of these image links are to shops. Some of these colors are selectively bred morphs.
The red stripe is an Ardentiella sp. (formerly called Merulanella sp.) “scarlet”, and the orange stripe is a Porcellio laevis “orange”.
The yellow stripe is a Cubaris sp. “blonde ducky”, and the green stripe is a paridotea ungulata!
The blue stripe is an Armadillidium vulgare with iridovirus, a disease which is, unfortunately, fatal. The purple stripe is a Bathynomus giganteus!
The white stripe is from a Platyarthus hoffmannseggii (there are many white isopods so I tried to go for one of my lesser-known favorites!), and the teal stripe is from a stunning Burmoniscus sp. “ice blue”.
There are two pink pods in this flag- Androniscus dentiger and Cubaris sp. “sakura/cherry blossom”!
(Continued in a second post since I can only add ten images at a time)
a belated second post! sorry that its no longer pride month, i got distracted trying to find the images sources, and well: it's done now!
The brown stripe is a Trachelipus rathkii:

And the black stripe is two isopods again! A Porcellio scaber, and an Armadillidium vulgare, (although the close up of the stripes on the flag does sort of look like Armadillo officinalis)

the yellow and purple in the intersex triangle are the same isopods as the yellow and purple stripes :)
sometimes I roll out receipt paper and doodle on the table at work like im a toddler someone’s trying to keep busy at a restaurant
for disability pride month I’d like to give a special shoutout to the word ow

they don’t want you to know this but Hi
it's crazy 2 me that every time i'm like "the existence of bugs is vital to the very fabric of reality as we know it. if we do not prioritize protect & value bugs, if we lose bugs, the entire world goes with them"
people in the comments will be like "okay but we could at least get rid of ticks and mosquitos because those spread disease."
we actually CANNOT get rid of ticks and mosquitos. not only do we plain lack the technology to lead a pointed extermination effort against them specifically without taking a score of other species down with them, but if we developed that technology and did eradicate mosquitos and ticks, it would be the catalyst of utter ecological collapse the likes of which i think people are not quite comprehending.
the problem is not the existence of bugs. the problem is that our current global systems ensure that specific Peoples in specific places are disproportionately impacted by zoonoses (illness spread between animals and humans).
those same populations also disproportionately lack access to preventative tools & PPE (down to things many of us take for granted so simply as effective bug spray), and crucially access to medical treatment.
the goal should not be an eradicating effort against bugs which would quite literally collapse entire ecosystems, but equitable access to healthcare, investment in medical research to improve preventative and acute treatment for zoonoses, and the destruction of systems which are currently rapidly increasing the threat of zoonoses worldwide (climate change!)
i am not defending the existence of bugs because i think they're cute and because i don't care about the devastating suffering zoonoses cause millions and millions of people.
the point is that the eradication of these species would likewise cause devastation and suffering, but the tools, the money, the minds, the research, the science ALL exist to actually change the world for the better through global public health systems, but it's all being strangulated by imperial fucking systems which have been and continue to destroy everything!
