You have no idea what people are doing in their communities to push back against the horror that is the current US government.

As a disabled woman living in Texas, I am struggling every day just to survive in this oppressive hellscape but I still find ways to help.

No, buying merch isn’t resistance. But supporting small businesses instead of big box stores is. Supporting artists in your community is. And if I can provide a little joy for people, a token of a favorite character that makes them feel a bit more resolve as they go out into this hellscape every day? I’m going to do that.

And yes, I still have to pay the bills. Because we live in capitalism. I sell fan made merch because I can’t work a typical job due to my disabilities, capitalism hates that.

The “we’re cooked” attitude is doing way more harm than a Daredevil t-shirt ever could.

First, Matt Murdock is literally a disabled man who understands law and justice and would be 100% against everything the Trump admin is doing.

Second, and probably more importantly, merch helps people find community. The joy of being able to go “i know what that shirt is from, i love that thing” gets two people talking, even if it’s only for a couple minutes, even if they never speak again. Fandom reminds us that we’re not alone, that there are people out there who are like us. But God forbid us weirdos have any joy or community, right? Community is an act of resistance, it reminds us that we’re not the only people around, that we have to work together for a better world. There is such a move to isolate us all, and community is fighting back.

I’m here to discourage others from spending money on it and to give myself and others words and space to work through some feelings. I’m a trans person that made Harry Potter one of my cornerstone interests. One of my favorite things. I’m not some cis person doing cope.

Harry Potter was a big thing. Like. Big in a way that’s difficult to fully understand. It still is. If you were caught up in it during your formative years it’s normal to need to process all of the horrid things now associated with it.
