Caribou are the only member of the deer family in which both males and females grow antlers. Bulls put their massive antlers—three feet high or more—to use during the rutting season as they battle other bulls in a fight to win a female mate. Calves are born in late May to early June, but only half will survive their first summer because of predation by wolves and grizzlies. Their preferred food is lichen, and they use their large hooves to dig it up even in winter. In summer, caribou will also eat the leaves of willow and birch, in addition to sedges and grasses. by Mind on Fire Photography

Photo by @argonautphoto This was the closest I’ve ever been to an animal of this size. I spent a good hour or so moving very slowly and staying close to trees, so I had some measure of cover and protection. It was just before the first snows and the valleys were bright red with blueberry bushes. This giant of a Caribou really stood out among the two seasons I spent in Denali.
