As someone who has avidly researched about 9/11, I can safely say the Venezuelan earthquake is, indeed, worse than a hundred 9/11s. People say it's one of the worst tragedies in Venezuelan history, and I would venture to say it is the worst. The only events worse than this are the Independence and Federal wars, and those were fucking wars.
But... The good news is that Israel is finally using their drones for something other than genocide. It is pretty scary how they just had state-of-the-art heat seeking drones at the ready, but you know what? As long as they're using them for good, I'm alright.
My parents live on a high floor. They are elderly, and hid under a doorway because they couldn't physically run downstairs on time.
If their building hadn't held on, they'd be dead.
A poorly made building is murder. Specially one in an area that (everyone knows) has been known to have terrible earthquakes every sixty or so years.
Please, when helping, concentrate your efforts in La Guaira because there's still so much to be done, and the people there do not have that many means. Many are relying on community for their rescue efforts. But those who do not have that many people, or whose families are trapped under the rubble, don't have anybody to turn to, and the Venezuelan authorities are bulldozing buildings even though they know there's people trapped inside
They need heavy machinery, fuel for said heavy machinery, people who know how to operate it, food, basic hygiene products...

I don't know the specifics of how they were built, but, seeing how I saw a video of this lady scratching through EPS debris and crying "Why did they use this for a building?!", I... Am at a loss of words.
My mom worked for one of the companies that makes EPS for construction, I’ve seen videos of the collapse buildings that’s not the same material, the EPS used for construction NEED a metal structure and a THICK layer of cement to make it functional in cases like this. The gov had hire the company my mom worked for to build misión vivienda and then they just took all the materials without paying a single cent and ran with it, they built those structures with no knowledge of how to use those materials. And most likely they also “bought” EPS that it’s not for construction from somewhere else. This gov doesn’t care about anything just wants to make money at the expense of peoples lives.

I hate myself for doing this. And I was afraid this moment would come, but honestly right now I have ran out of options.

I will be completely honest about this, for transparency sake, this money will go to personal expenses such as pads, I can't use bar soap to shower because it irritates my skin so I have to buy shower gel which is generally more expensive, I also have to give my parents a monthly sum to help with groceries and cleaning products for the house, body lotion because my skin scabs a lot and that helps keep it under control. I also would like to pay off part of the debt I got in when I had to buy a new laptop last year because my old one stopped working. I've payed about a third of it, but still have to finish paying it.
As many others the pandemic had affected my flow of work, I work for a chinese company doing transcripts in different websites, ever since the pandemic started the projects that would normally come to us have been redirected to other teams that do them for less money. I live in Venezuela, which also doesn't help with hyperinflation running rampant and no plan in sight for possible vaccination, finding a different job has proven to be almost impossible.

While yes, many of the buildings that fell were made in a hurry by Chávez, there are also older buildings that predate the regulations made after the 1967 earthquake. These buildings were not up to standard and yet were allowed to be inhabited... Again, because civil safety was not enforced by the chavista regime, and was actively neglected.
I can only imagine what could have happened if we weren't in a dictatorship. Everyone was so ready to help, literal children helping to rescue without any equipment, survivors joining to help and try to get as many people as possible, medics and students across the whole country ready to save people and they have to fucking fight their own government. A double earthquake, a system that was already collapsed, houses made without the proper safety regulations and on top of all they have to fucking fight the army in order to help.
On the other hand, imagine if this had happened in 2025, or worse, in 2016 like my grandmother always said (because Venezuela gets a big earthquake every 50 years or so)
It would have been ten times harder for the volunteers, who wouldn't have even been able to post videos without becoming harassed
This just in: the Caracas Earthquake of 1812, the one that Bolivar dealt with, happened because of fracking and not because of the San Sebastian fault, over which most of the country's population decided to live

This would not have happened under Maduro, because the dictatorship would have stopped all manner of aid (because they would not have seen this as a problem), and prevented us from talking about it on social media.
Yet that bitch is still doing the same bullshit by taking donations, letting officials still donations and not letting people WHO ACTUALLY WANT TO HELP go to the affected areas while they haven’t moved a finger since it started.
The military is only good to shoot at students and civilians for protesting for change but not one single tank was deployed to help move rubble, not one single “soldier” has come out to help.
I have to say that I talked to my mother today, she said there's been reports of some authorities actually helping, and I have seen videos of some of municipal police and firemen doing so, but it is true that the national guard has been a nuisance at best, and an active threat at worst, and rumours has it Diosdado is behind it all, giving them orders not to do what's right. I hope we have our own Nuremberg trials someday soon.
Some authorities are helping but it’s not enough they don’t have the right equipment. It’s just enraging how they just let our people suffer.
