Speaking of Gorcha Iβm fascinated with how his attraction to the Marquis manifested.
So before Gorcha himself appears we get two examples of his obsession with image and property/territory: Killing his daughterβs lover and running off to repel invading turks.
When his daughter, Sdenka, falls in love with a traveler lacking wealth and station Gorcha exercises his authority as father by shooting her lover when they attempt to elope.
When Gorcha leaves to fight the turks the pillaging by Turkish forces is essentially the same as Sdenka fleeing with her lover, as the Turks are foreigners taking/destroying his property.
HOWEVER, when faced with Marquis Jacques Saturnin du Antoine he has no problem with a stranger at his table, nor does he demand an explanation for his presence. He understands the Marquis is a man of wealth and importance, and that immediately excuses his foreign presence.
Gorcha even seems to encourage the Marquisβ interest in Sdenka, making mention of him becoming family and forcing the Marquis and Sdenka to dance together for his own satisfaction. He sees him as a means to advance his family and begins to desire Jacques as an enterprising wife would, and attempts to satisfy desire for Jacques through his daughter. Gorcha also states to understand what French women must feel for the Marquis, voicing his lust though these hypothetical women.
When Gorcha finally tricks the Marquis into a sexual encounter he does so by literally taking the form of his own daughter. The movie kinda takes the crude idea of top and bottom by having Gorcha literally take a role of the woman. At the same time Gorchaβs illusion also works to conceal that he has also bitten him. The bite being a form of penetration which curses Jacques to with becoming part of the Vourdalak family. Playing out kinda like they have consummated a marriage.
Still thinking about the vourdalak, and how everyone who actually stood up to Gorcha avoid the curse by achieving permanent death.
But death wasnβt an escape! Sdenka giving up and preferring to kill herself rather than attempt to go against Gorcha again allowed the curse to continue through her! It was the dog showing hostility towards the master, Piotr going against her father, and the Marquis fighting off and rejecting his rapist that allowed them to avoid undeath, whereas Sdenka just gave up.
So she falls victim to the vourdalakβs curse but is also the one who goes on to spread it.
Jegor was loyal, he allowed the curse to spread because of his reverence to his father and his own tight grasp on his wife and child. Sdenka was too beaten down to rebel after her lover was shot, and she gave up completely after Piotrβs failure. Despite appearing the most rebellious she only passed the duty of destroying Gorcha onto Piotr then the Marquis.
Jegor perpetuated the patriarchy by adhering to his role as father/lord and submitting to his own. Sdenka relied on her lover to save her and take her away from her oppressive family, then expected Piotr to be βthe manβ and stand up to Gorcha, and after that she leaves to commit suicide which passes the responsibility to Marquis Jacques.
Reliance on a man for freedom leaves her trapped, then expecting protection from another victim who is abused SPECIFICALLY for failing to be a man and a protector leaves her without options, so she decides to just kill herself and leaves the Marquis imprisoned in the house of his soon to be rapist.
I thought her dance with the Marquis also implied she was raped by Gorcha, so her mental break causing her to leave the Marquis bound was tragic. Especially since he was freed without her help, and was assaulted after he decided to return to save her.
βI want a toxic vampire yaoi film with canon gay characters and onscreen sex!β *a finger on the monkeyβs paw curls*
anyway The Vourdalak is a really good movie, you should watch it
Thoughts about the queer themes of Le Vourdalak. Spoilers under the cut:
I think itβs really telling and interesting that Piotr is the only family member killed in a non-intimate manner. Gorcha doesnβt even get -close- to Piotr, Piotr was also the only family member willing to fight back, who saw Gorcha for what he was. Queerness recognized in others as a reflection of the self.
Gorcha shooting Piotr in the head, (with a traditionally phallic, masculine weapon) from a distance, wasting all of that blood, that life force, avoiding the physical intimacy of Piotrβs destruction, feels like internalized disgust from Gorcha, especially in light of the last half of the film.
Piotr shooting the dog in menβs clothing, trying their best to be a good model of what a dutiful son and man is supposed to be, shooting the dog -because- Gorcha asked them to. The man whose respect everyone else in the family, even the dog, dies for.
But Piotr doesnβt die respecting Gorcha, Piotr is the only one that knows they will most likely die for trying, goes to that death facing it with clear eyes. They dressed in something that made them feel brave and Gorcha saw them, saw the disrespect for his authority, the disrespect of traditional gender, and killed that queerness before it could kill him.
Piotr is also an incredibly important symbol of queerness not equating to evil in this movie. Piotr is just a person trying to do the best they can, caught in a system that does not accept them, but their queerness is never framed as evil, honestly neutral for the most part, which really helps contrast Piotr against Gorcha. Piotr is also never bitten, and so they are excluded from the familyβs second rising. They get to end as they are, human, instead of being transformed.
Gorcha simpers a lot in this film, he moans and flounces and makes fun of the man he likes and ultimately tricks him into sex, and that is what both kills the Marquis -and- kills Gorcha. The Marquis could be seen as a hero for killing Gorcha, (he isnβt, for personality-related reasons) but heβs already been corrupted due to the -interest- and the bite of Gorcha. The queerness thrust upon him. The same as Jonathan Harker, the same as Thomas Hutter, doomed by the visceral attentions of The Other.
Obviously Iβm not saying this is a homophobic film, there are just a lot of layers and to have the monster be so explicitly queer is so -interesting-. To have him be the traditional, Slavic-origin vampire, a shambling corpse, to have him be an otherworldly puppet AND to have him represent centuries of patriarchy and have him be queer is so many things at once, I love this movie a lot, is what Iβm trying to say.

All my haters become aligators when I activate my gatorinator.
you laugh now, but when my gatorinator is ready, it's all over
update:
transmogrifying my haters into an animal that is known for something called the "death roll" has backfired in a manner no one could have forecasted
Having taken stock of the situation, it's not as bad as I originally thought. It's not like these crocodilians are an urgent problem, much less a representation of my own mortality. There's no ticking clock here.
well now you're just doing this on purpose
I think that's the highest tags forecast I have received so far.
Posts that have 100k gators to me.
Actually there are only 5 gators in my post, but it is an understandable mistake.
Now there are 100,005 gators on this post
...
You know what? Good job.
Other people said this post had thousands of notes in their mind, but only contributed two notes.
You? You said that it had 100k gators to you.
And then you did it.
+1 respect point.
now that's what i call a

FUCKING DEVASTATING
The hatemail game on this website is insane
the state does not need to assign you a sex, nor does it need to keep inalterable record of it btw
a very interesting terf objection to this one boils down to "but how would the state know who to protect?" because it speaks to the incredible privilege of being in a class the state actually ever remotely wants to protect. most oppressed groups do not want the state to have a registry of them, lol
the patriarchy has done a great job convincing white cisgender women that it's in their best interests to maintain it
I took a bus to a conference today and the bus driver fully stopped the bus to identify and chastise a person who was playing music out loud on their phone. That is how you get me to actually complete the customer service survey specifically so I can give you top ratings
It's days later and I'm still thinking about this man. Full ass bus pulled over to the side of a state highway with the hazards on, stalking down the center aisle intoning "ALL RIGHT. WHO'S GOT IT. YOU CAN'T HAVE IT ON SPEAKER." I want to commission a statue of him. a hero. a king.
We gotta start calling it a sex change again to remind everybody you can change your sex
Obviously the old narrative/misconception about "having The Surgery" was uh. Stupid lol. The common refrain was "which one?" to emphasize transition doesn't work like that. But now we're living in "sex is an immutable Natural Fact" world and it's like well no actually. You're somehow wronger about how trans people's bodies work than you were before. There is no singular The Surgery because "sex" is made up of several different traits, nearly all of which are changeable, through surgery or hormones or even just exercising different muscle groups to change their appearance. "Buh chromosomes" you don't know what a chromosome is
