i'm tired as hell so excuse me if this does not come out as eloquently as it could, but I was thinking today about how I really do think online fandom overall needs to re-assess the 'rules' so to speak. i have a lot of empathy and understanding for why fandom has become the way it has when it comes to the 'rules' . having experienced various purges and expulsions, i understand why the community rides so hard for ideas like 'your kink is not my kink' and 'don't like don't read'. I think the anti-censorship angle is important and free expression is one of the beautiful things about fandom spaces. however, these rules fall short when it comes to examining the social structures and systematic issues in the works that fandoms produce, specifically racism, homophobia, misogyny etc. because there is a lot of that around. a LOT. once you really notice it, it is hard to un-see and for many marginalised fans it makes the spaces actively hostile and impossible to exist in. it is not fine to say 'if you don't like it, just click away' when you're talking about something like racism, which is actively harmful even if the marginalised fan never reads those fics. so many times i have seen people engaging in actively bigoted behaviour hide behind dldr and label people criticising them as purists and censors, evoking all of those pasts expulsions. that can't be it. we need to be able to talk about these thing beyond 'nothing a fan does can ever be criticised or examined because that is immediately censorship'. of course this does not mean attacking any individual people for perceived offences, but it does mean people actively start noticing bigoted patterns in fan works and most importantly start giving a shit about them. it has to be possible, or what even is the point. just endlessly repeating 'the rules of fandom' is not enough to create a good community and it never has been
