To be clear: obviously growing up in a society that is significantly shaped by a specific religion will influence you even if you are not personally a follower of that religion. And Christianity is tightly woven into the culture of most of the so-called Western World. That part is correct.

I'm from northern Germany. The culture here is strongly shaped by Lutheran Protestantism. This does, of course, impact me, despite the fact that I am and was raised atheist. Issue is. People who were specifically raised in non-Christian religions are not somehow immune to this. There is ZERO basis to the assumption that the muslim kids who grew up next door are LESS impacted by it. Lack of religous beliefs does not leave a void that mindlessly and defenselessly absorbs any religious bias that happens to float by! What the fuck!

"If you grew up in the United States of America (or one of the many, many other predominantly Christian countries in the world), you are culturally Christian" – okay, sounds plausible – "unless you were raised in a specific non-Christian religion!" – no. just no. sorry. My sibling in Cultural Christianity, being a non-christian religious person does not magically innoculate you against the Christian hegemony, not even a little bit. We are all in this together. So please, for the love of the Invisible Floating Tortoise, stop it with this nonsensical "except when you're otherwise religious" caveat.

"But you just said ‘oh my God'!" Yeah. You'd be surprised how often I've heard that particular phrase from muslim peers. Many of them celebrate Christmas with their families (secularly). It's almost as if the environment you grow up in impacts you. Or something.
