The biggest failure of science as a institution is that instead of its findings be able to force governments to enact policies after an informed public comes to a consensus, we have rich people paying scientists to obscure the data and create fake discourse.
the result is a fracture reality in which proven facts are debated and basically money can buy reality and affect policy without the consent neither of the scientists nor of the people.
under capitalism money is speech. the supreme court of the usa was right about that. and that connection makes it impossible to have any representation system that actually mirrors the will of the people therefore succeeding on the supposed main goal of democracy. a state that servers the people.
however if you are a pessimist about democracy you do understand that democracy only serves the citizens just as it did back in ancient Athens. If anything the current system must be counted as a democracy and who actually has power reveals who is an actual citizen. And unfortunately the proletariat is not.
Science is deeply political and it is a tool that creates reality it doesn't observe it objectively. And the disconnect of stem and humanities is one of our biggest failures of the modern era. Abstractions are useful when you create a bridge you don't want to fall not when you have to understand your role and position as a scientists in a society. We should have ethics and politics classes in universities and talk about the material history of our area of expertise. without it we end up creating more and more silicon valleys.
