Widdershins go when the moon doth wane, and the werewolf howls by the dread wolfsbane. The Wiccan Rede
2007
The ringing phone split through my sleep. I groaned against the urge to cover my head with a pillow to smother either the sound or myself. The ringing stopped, the call ending, only for a moment before it started up again. I let the second call go to voice, but tossed the pillow to the side on the third. For someone to be calling me so persistently, it had to be important. I checked my watch for the time, squinting in the dim light. Ten o’clock, morning if the sunlight filtering through the curtains was any indication. A perfectly reasonable time for a phone call, had I not spent the past forty-six hours hunting down what was allegedly the Rod of Asclepius with all its divine healing abilities but was, of course, a poor knockoff — really, it wasn’t terribly impossible to imagine that a Greek artifact might have ended up in Italy — and had barely had enough time to eat let alone sleep.

It can be any voice sample, but if you would like a line from the show:
I was eventually able to pursue home care. For my bedside manner, I was able to land a job that paid me more than I’d ever been paid, but for good reason.

Hey y'all why are writers always cold?
...why?
They're always surrounded by drafts!
How many mystery writers does it take to change a lightbulb?
Oh god.
How many?
Two! One to change the bulb, and the other to give it an unexpected twist at the end!
What do writers have for breakfast?
Coffee?
Synonym buns!
Where do all the struggling writers live?
How are you coming up with all these?
Where?
Writer's Block!
What do writers suffer from each spring?
(I've heard a lot of them over the years.)
Allergies. Next question.
you were close; A case of allegories
Why are writers always in great shape?
Circular prose
Nope! It's because we're always running out of ideas!
Did you hear about the famous writer who turned out to be a fraud?
I did not
His life had it's prose and cons...
Why is editing a better job than writing?
It's more rewording?
Correct! I am out of jokes. :(
We need more women characters who are Male Protagonists. You know. Slightly haggard. She's splashing cold water on her face and gripping the edge of the sink staring in the mirror for a minute. She's coping badly with her deadwife
I am so tired of short-attention-span, trim-the-fat culture. All writing advice these days is for how to write like Chuck Palahniuk. "Cut 'think', cut 'feel', cut 'wonder' - only action, only pushing forward, show and move and move and move." What if I could emulate this style, and still don't want to? What if I want to write like Henry James, with three paragraphs of introspective musings between each dialogue line? The music advice is, "make it shortform, make it Tik-Tok compatible, make it punchy, hit the refrain as soon as possible." What if I want that 10-minute prog rock piece? What if I want that symphony? What if I want it slow and luxurious and lazy? Movies. Series. Poetry. Bodies. Everything is "trimmed trimmed trimmed trimmed, stripped bare, you have three seconds to win me over, make it airport chic." I don't want to win you over, then, I guess. I want the fat left it. I want the pleasure and the indolence and the indulgence. Fuck this art-advice that's always "your art needs Ozempic."
I take exception to poetry because it is an art whose muscle is honed for the strength to express as much as possible within strict, stylized constraints. Just like other highly stylized art forms, like genres of theatre or ballet.
But in general, yes. The quickfire, surface-level, use-once-and-throwaway culture permeates art these days - all glitz and no substance. My more recent style is more pared down for reasons above, but I've experimented with and celebrate other styles too - stream-of-consciousness, long rambling flowery language, everything in between.
I refuse to rearrange my writing to "hook" my readers within the first sentence and make it a blockbuster action script, and maybe I won't be able to get published traditionally due to this, but I can't deal with reducing the richness of human experience down to how desperately I can hold onto a tiktok-addicted teen's attention span.
Arts and entertainment are often grouped together, but are not always interchangeable. Not all art needs to be instant gratification entertainment. And the important ones never were.

Plot and conflict:
Are the internal and external conflicts well defined for the main characters?
Are the internal conflicts and the external conflicts organic and believable?
Are there enough stakes?
Are the plot twists believable but still unexpected?
How I ethically use genAI for my writing:
ChatGPT in particular has been so incredibly helpful in my writing process! It works perfectly in fueling my undying hatred for the slop plagiarism machine. Spite has been my singular motivator as I spend every day loathing the amount of AI covers and slop books flooding the market. AI has done what no motivational video on YouTube has managed to do: it has motivated me to sit my ass down and fucking write because I am a writer and'll be damned before I let some second hand thinker get the last laugh
