And I know there is a lot of cultural and family tie related things that can make relocating as an older person scary but I grew up in an area with a terrible economy, a declining population, no healthcare, no job opportunities, no educational opportunities and terrible infrastructure and I got so sick of listening to people complain that their children left. It is a horrible place to raise a child. There is no drugstore in the town, no pediatrician, no entertainment, corruption, a terrible school and again, no jobs. If you actually loved your grandchildren, you’d understand why their parents don’t want to raise them there.

Born on this day 78 years ago: effervescent underground actress, cabaret artiste, Warhol muse and transgender trailblazer Holly Woodlawn (né Haroldo Santiago Franceschi Rodriguez Danhakl, 26 October 1946 - 6 December 2015). In the late 1960s Woodlawn, along with Candy Darling and Jackie Curtis, comprised the trio of outrageous Andy Warhol Superstar trans queens who would inspire and get name-checked - and thus be immortalized - in Lou Reed's 1972 single “Walk on the Wild Side”. (Woodlawn outlived her friends Darling and Curtis by decades). I only crossed paths with Woodlawn once, when literary homme du monde Rupert Smith memorably interviewed her onstage about her life and career at London’s Drill Hall Theatre in September 2007. Physically she was already in failing health, but Woodlawn gave a master class in charisma, wit and star power and reminded me of an escapee from a Pedro Almodovar film. When I was leaving, I told her what a pleasure it had been to see her and Woodlawn vowed, “Oh, you haven't seen the last of me! I'll be back!" Sadly, it wasn’t to be. The best way to remember Woodlawn is to watch her gutsy, hilarious performance in the Paul Morrissey black comedy Trash (1970).
