I slept, woke up, and my brain cleared up a little.

Here’s what I want to say. The concept of the ending is valid, because they basically have two options available to them: either remain within their roles and keep their miracles, since without them they’re incapable of functioning, or take on some other form in order to free themselves from dependence on their very nature, which imposes limitations on them. And if they choose the second option, their memories would inevitably get fucked up. As humans, they simply wouldn’t be capable of containing the memory of who they used to be, because, well, they would be human. A human mind isn’t as vast as that of a supernatural being. And besides, if they remembered their previous existence, they probably wouldn’t even be able to survive in human bodies out of sheer habit of ignoring physical needs.

But even under those circumstances, it still would’ve worked better if their "earthly past" wasn’t explicitly spelled out - like they themselves only vaguely and sluggishly realize that they’ve seen each other somewhere before, but can’t for the life of them remember where. You know that kind of TV format where characters just sort of… don’t age, and the show simply follows their everyday lives? That would’ve made sense here. Not literal immortality, but that sort of sitcom-style disregard for time.

Again, the concept of the ending itself is acceptable. But the way that concept was executed is complete garbage. Because it’s drama for the sake of drama, angst for the sake of angst. Good Omens, despite the weight of the themes it deals with, never stops being a comedy rather than a soap opera. And even the whole "becoming human" idea desperately lacked a more direct, lighthearted perspective instead of this suffocating sentimentality of "and then they fell in love at first sight".

That’s the problem with how everything ended up getting butchered - there was no room left for any lightness at all. The movie feels heavy, dense, unpleasant; there’s not even a safe way to approach it without getting pricked by something. Because in trying to "please the fans", the writers basically staged a clown parade where they crammed absolutely everything possible into a format that couldn’t support it. And it’s not even about the limited runtime - it’s that these people have absolutely no idea how to work with this material or how to preserve tonal balance. They don’t know what can be sacrificed or changed.

Some of the movie felt like an episode, but not a movie. Aziraphale felt a little too mean to Crowley in some ways. If it’s a finale, they should have addressed the biggest communication issues the two have and the kiss. But they don’t ever really do that?

Anyways the point is, the ending could have worked if the journey had been better, and how they go to the choice of creating the universe. God doesn’t really give them a binary choice of “either you stay together in this universe but humanity still has heaven and hell, or you can reset the universe without influence from god forever.” She asks them what they would do, which gives them free range to say anything. If the choice was binary, then it would deny the endless options they had.

And when they are about to vanish one of them should have said something like “I know whatever happens, the love we have will always be there” or something that implied that they believed that no matter what happens their love will always exist. And then if they are humans, it would have been interesting if they said “Hey, have we met before?” Or something to imply that deep down the real Crowley and Aziraphale are there.

Also apparently in the credits, people think there is an implication that they exist in many different universes. Which would be totally fine if that was displayed in the ending, not one where Asa and Anthony don’t really resemble or feel like the characters we know and love.

I know people are excited, but I want people to remember before watching:

-Your theory might not end up being true.

-Aziraphale might have or not have left for Heaven intentionally. He also may or may not have a plan.

-Their reunion might be REALLY awkward.

-Aziraphale and Crowley might both apologize. But there is a chance only one of them does.

-They might turn into humans. I mean I wouldn’t like it, but if I expect the possibility it will be less heartbreaking.

-They might not kiss again… *cries*

-Don’t have super high expectations but also don’t have super low expectations.

-There is a chance the ending is only “okay” or a simple “good.”

-Have fun, or at least try to.
