BuckTommy + touches
Happy 2nd BuckTommy Day.
Buck-Tommy Deer-Cat Oli-Lou parallels and contrasts I cannot get out of my head
1. The strongest parallel I see is- the deer looks like the more vulnerable animal, but the cat is the one who is harder to approach.
Evan Buckley is our deer. Emotionally visible. Alert. Big eyes, heart on display. He startles, he runs toward things, he longs for connection and when he trusts someone there is almost an earnest 'here I am, please see me' quality to him. A deer is prey-coded, so we instinctively read vulnerability into it, but deer are also powerful, fast, capable of surviving injury and continuing to move. That's very Buck to me.
Tommy Kinard is the cat. Not because he's small or cute, but because cats control access. A cat can want affection desperately and still move away when the hand reaches for it. It approaches on its own terms. It sits nearby before it sits against you. It watches. It assesses. Sometimes, the moment it realizes it has become attached, its instinct is almost: 'oh no'. That's Tommy.
This gives a gorgeous BuckTommy metaphor- the deer thinks the cat doesn't want him because the cat keeps retreating. The cat retreats because wanting the deer has made it vulnerable.
2. There is another layer I really like. Deer are herd animals. Buck's entire emotional arc is built around finding and keeping his herd- Maddie, Bobby, Eddie, Christopher and the 118. His deepest wounds repeatedly circle abandonment and belonging. He moves toward family.
Cats are more complicated socially. Domestic cats absolutely form attachments and social groups, but their affection can be subtle and selective. Tommy, especially as fandom often interprets him, has learned to be self-contained. He has people. He has a life. But he doesn't necessarily build his identity around being indispensable to a group the way Buck does.
So Buck-deer looks at Tommy-cat and thinks- come into the herd.
Tommy-cat looks at Buck-deer and thinks- you don't understand. If I come close enough to belong, you can hurt me.
😭
3. There's also a physical/body-language parallel. A deer expresses alarm through its whole body- head lifting, ears turning, muscles preparing to flee. Buck is emotionally kinetic. His feelings tend to inhabit his body. He paces, gestures, talks, moves.
A cat can become frightened and go completely still. It compresses. Watches and calculates. Tommy often reads to me as someone whose distress would make him quieter, not louder.
So in a visual narrative, when something threatens their relationship, Buck-deer bolts toward the problem while Tommy-cat disappears under the porch.
And Buck is standing in the forest going, WHY DID YOU LEAVE?
Meanwhile Tommy is six feet away in a bush thinking, I am handling this extremely well.
🤣😭
4. A deer cannot chase a cat into trusting it.
Buck's instinct is pursuit. Explain more. Love harder. Show up. Fix. Reassure.
But with a cat, pursuit often creates more distance.
The deer has to stay quietly without demanding that the cat come closer.
Eventually the cat emerges because it has learned something profoundly important: the deer is still there.
That feels extremely Buck and Tommy to me, especially if drawing from the breakup and imagining a reconciliation.
Then, on Tommy's side, the cat has to learn that the deer startles too. Buck's openness can make him look emotionally fearless. He isn't. Abandonment terrifies him. The cat can't keep vanishing and assume the deer will always remain in.
So their mutual lesson becomes beautifully symmetrical:
Buck has to learn not to chase. Tommy has to learn not to disappear.
The deer stays. The cat comes back.
Eventually they learn how to lie in the same patch of sunlight. 😭
5. With the obvious caveat that we're only seeing their public-facing selves, Lou often comes across as the more openly goofy, excitable, slightly chaotic one, while Oliver Stark often seems more measured and composed in interviews.
Then they walk onto 9-1-1 and somebody has apparently hit reverse. 🤣
Buck is the deer going: HELLO. I HAVE A FEELING. MY ENTIRE BODY IS NOW PARTICIPATING IN THE FEELING.
Tommy is the cat sitting six feet away like: I have assessed the situation and will be providing one facial microexpression. Good luck.
Meanwhile, public-vibe Lou feels like he'd be the cat who misjudged a jump, knocked over a lamp and immediately looked delighted with himself. Oliver feels like the deer standing nearby with an expression that says, I cannot believe I'm associated with this animal. 😂
6. It actually makes me wonder whether that is part of why their onscreen contrast works. They're not simply playing extensions of their apparent public personas. Oliver puts so much physical emotional transparency into Buck- his face, posture, the way Buck's entire body seems to react before his brain catches up. Lou gives Tommy a much more contained, economical energy. So the deer/cat thing gets even funnier when the actors' public-facing energies seem almost inverted.
7. Character Buck: deer
Actor Oliver's public vibe: discerning cat
Character Tommy: cat
Actor Lou's public vibe: golden retriever who has somehow obtained cat privileges
And the fandom calls Buck the resident golden retriever of the 118. 😭
8. A cat-coded man canonically named Tommy, as in tomcat.
A deer-coded man canonically called Buck- as in literally a male deer.
The writers may or may not have intended any of this, but fandom symbolism has been handed an absolutely ridiculous gift here. 😭🐈🦌❤️

Looking for a logical explanation for missing Tommy and Lou so much 😭💔
Omg!!! Anirudh is in Bangalore, my city 😭😭 I wish there was a way to reach him 🥺😭 I did send him a message on instagram, asking if he would do a fan meet up. Incase by some miracle, I get a chance to meet him, why not try. 🤞🤞
How wonderful of Lou to like this amazing statement by Heath Ledger
Buck dressing like Lou
Oliver dressing like Tommy
I really can't with these two 🤣😭❤️
Everything reminds me of Tommy 😩😩😭😭❤️💔

Flashback scenes I need in S10
1. Tommy consoling Buck, right after Bobby’s death
2. Eddie ACTUALLY APOLOGISING to Buck for the Kitchen incident
3. A scene explaining "Tommy’s choice"
4. Everybody's immediate reactions when they find out about Buck’s addiction
5. Buck actually talking to his father about Bobby and finding SOME solace in it
6. BUCK VISITING BOBBY’S GRAVE IN MINNESOTA
7. Deleted scene post Billy Boils funeral
8. Buck-Tommy post Madney wedding
Call me crazy, but it gives me great kick that I have a mole in pretty much the same place as Lou 🤭
Almost makes me wanna workout harder to make my collar bone more visible.
Buck intentionally distanced himself from Theo because, the thought of not being his dad felt like a much bigger heartbreak to experience than the heartbreak of creating distance when Theo was born and the idea of being Theo's "donor, not dad", which he knew from the start, finally caught up with him. He had to cut the cord before attachment deepened any further.
Tommy intentionally distanced himself from Evan because, the thought of not being in his life long term felt like a much bigger heartbreak to experience than the heartbreak of creating distance when Evan asked him to move in and the idea of him being Evan’s "first, not last", which he knew from the start, finally caught up with him. He had to cut the cord before attachment deepened any further.
Sound familiar?
The relationship dynamics are different. But it is still about love, attachment and fear of heartbreak that pushed them to walk away.
If there's one character that deserves grace and understanding, it's Tommy.
As weird as it sounds, this is the reason why my belief that Tommy will be back is stronger than ever. ❤️

I like Eddie Diaz's character and love the way Ryan has been playing him. Eddie is not holy like some people make him out to be. He is definitely not perfect, which is what makes him human and that's why I like him.
*
I am a Tevan fan through and through.
*
Tommy gets so much hate from many Buddies and it pours on to Lou as well so frequently, its so sad. Apparently Eddie is perfect, Eddie can do no wrong but all Tommy has ever done is wrong.
That is so irritating and it makes me want to pick on Eddie for every single action of his and not appreciate/acknowledge Ryan's acting at all. But if I do that, how am I any different from those kind of Buddie fans? And the truth is, I actually do like Eddie and Ryan both. I will not disregard the good things Eddie has done, simply because I support Tevan.
*
Reminder to self- never become obsessed with one ship so much that I start abusing the character and actor of another ship, that I am not able to see any good at all in that character and have no consideration/respect/empathy towards the actor playing it.
God, please never turn me into that person 🙏

And it’s now been a year since we last saw him …
Tommy, the children miss you !
~Part 2~
Tommy's POV
Tommy doesn’t remember most of the funeral. Just fragments. The weight of Theo in his arms. The dull murmur of voices. The unbearable finality of dirt hitting wood.
Connor is gone
Kameron is gone
And Theo.... Theo is still here
Tommy tightens his hold around the kid, like if he loosens it even a little, something else might be taken too. He doesn’t know what he’s doing. He just knows he couldn’t let Theo be handed off to strangers. Not yet. Not today. Not when the world has already taken too much.
Theo shifts against his chest, small fingers gripping his blazer. Trusting him for no good reason. “Its okay” Tommy murmurs, even though the words feel hollow in his own mouth. He knows its not okay. He knows Theo is not okay. He knows he is not okay, hasn't been for quite some time.
They start walking out with the others, slow, heavy steps. Tommy keeps his eyes forward. If he looks at anyone, they might ask questions he doesn’t have answers to. And then....
“Mr. Poop” says Theo
Tommy freezes
He looks up. And there he is. Evan. Standing a few feet away, like something pulled straight out of a life Tommy thought he’d already buried. His Evan. Except.... no. Not his. Not anymore. Not for a long time now. The world tilts.
Why is he here?
How is he here?
Does he know Kam? Connor? Theo?
Of course, he would know, why else would he be here.
Tommy’s grip tightens without him meaning to. Theo lets out a sharper cry, distressed now, overwhelmed. “Hey, hey, its alright Theo” Tommy tries, but his voice betrays him, cracks under the weight of everything he’s holding back.
He’s not prepared for this. He’s not enough for any of this. Then Evan moves, no hesitation, closing the distance between them. Just.... forward.
Arms wrapping around both of them. Around Theo. Around Tommy.
Tommy goes still, like if he breathes wrong, the moment will break apart. Evan’s warmth is achingly familiar, muscle memory waking out of deep slumber. It’s everything that Tommy needed to let go, of the breath he didn't even know he was holding on to.
Theo’s crying starts to quiet between them, caught in the space they have made, something steady for Tommy, something safe for Theo. Tommy swallows hard. He hasn’t been held like this in so long.
For a second, he leans into this fragile sensation of being held by Evan, into something that almost feels like it could still exist. Then Evan speaks....
“I’m here for you”
The words land somewhere deep. Somewhere Tommy has kept locked up tight. Tommy closes his eyes briefly, just for a second. Because he doesn’t know what this means and what happens next. But for the first time since everything fell apart;
he doesn’t feel like he’s holding Theo alone.
