THE ZZZS ARE TO INDICATE SHE GETS TO SLEEP IN. THERE ARE FLOCKS OF BIRDS TO INDICATE THAT SHE IS FREE AS A BIRD BECAUSE CLASSES ARE OVER. SHE DREW BUTTERFLIES IN HER COMPUTER MONITOR ICONS????

If you haven’t heard word, or rather seen spell, emoji spells are having a moment. It’s kind of nuts and feels a little dangerous, but you beautiful souls use it only for good. 

You just want be able to focus on a book without being disturbed by things that go bump in the night, or your family or roommates, who might also be what is bumping in the night.

You honey bears are saving the frickin bees.

Spells can be incredibly specific.

Or a little vague.

Like all things late-2016, it’s gotten a touch political.

Sometimes it works.

Sometimes we’re left hoping it works.

But always, as we see in you ghouls and goblins every spooky day, emoji spells are nothing but pure love.

These Lizards Are Experts at Rock-Paper-Scissors

Evolutionary stable strategies are cool. If you think if life as a game, and the organisms inside of it as players, then evolutionary stable strategies are like a set of rules to keep a complex system in equilibrium.  Only instead of being written down like Monopoly instructions, these rules are encoded in the organism’s genes.

Male side-blotched lizards have stumbled on such an arrangement. The three color variants of this species’ males–orange, blue, and yellow–all have slightly different behaviors when it comes to finding mates and protecting territory. Just like a game of rock-paper-scissors, each one beats another and can get beat by the third. As a result, the population exists in a natural equilibrium, one that regularly cycles and stabilizes itself… all because of what’s written in their genes!
