look so i was very fat throughout most of my teenage years and i'm not a fan of the ozempic superskinny proana craze thats happening in hollywood, but i also think there's this insane lack of empathy that some people have when discussing women with anorexia in particular. i understand that some of these women are in the public eye and that their choices are perpetuating some very harmful ideas to a very young audience. i'm not trying to say that they're not participating in a cycle that is incredibly damaging and effectively creating the next generation of underweight female celebs. i get that. however, it is a DISORDER. i'm not saying that having a disorder completely absolves you of all blame or responsibility, but that we seem to understand that going 2 weeks without showering is a normal symptom of depression and that self-harm behaviours are normal symptoms of low self esteem. anorexia is the psychiatric condition with the highest mortality rate. it affects up to 3% of women. i promise you that all the people who've ever starved themselves to death didn't do it because they're morally reprehensible. they didn't refuse recovery to make the lives of the people around them miserable. i mean this despite knowing all the ugly things that many people with eating disorders think about themselves and others. the fact is that the competitiveness that leads to public body checking and the dysmorphia that leads to fatphobia and the shame (and career-consciousness) that leads to believing that you are or lying about being healthy ARE ALL SYMPTOMS. or at least, they are to be expected. i have to assume its a level of internalised misogyny that leads to this level of vitriol towards anorexic women. to an extent, i understand it - as a fat girl who struggled with binge eating, it took me a long time to recognise that i was a victim of the same oppressive beauty standards as underweight girls. we both suffered, but they were more greatly rewarded for it by the world. that's not something i can rightly blame them for anymore. i don't mean to say that women with eating disorders have no agency, but that i recoil at language that suggests that anything harmful they're doing is wholly intentional. their brains are sludge from malnutrition. they are exhausted. they feel disgusting and euphoric over and over again in an endless maddening cycle. what they're going through might be making the world worse, and it might be doing it on a large scale, but just because their symptoms are more personally (or societally) hurtful than those of another disorder does not give them more agency in ridding themselves of it. anorexia is pretty much something you have for life. full recovery is extremely rare. next time you have a depressive episode and spend two weeks in bed, i'd like to see what you say when someone tells you to just get up and stop being so helpless.
