Yeah, the inherent assumption that if it’s not Jane it must be someone else he’s dating makes me boggle. It might just be someone he’s standing near? It might be a random woman at the party he was chatting with? Talking to/standing near a woman who isn’t Jane doesn’t imply romantic interest in her, after all—he stands near Darcy all the time. Ah, fandom.
