ORIGIN: »about form« - project

Last year, a collaborative project of the Bauhaus-University Weimar and OTH Regensburg examined the historical idea of »form« in the history of design. Whilst modernity was celebrating »the good form« as guarantee for a social and aesthetically well-functioning object, contemporary theories of »form« tend to focus on knowledge making within the design process.

Laura Strasser is an expert in the contemporary reinterpretation of the craftsmanship of porcelain manufacture. The production technique of her »Rice Dinnerware« collection dates back to the Ming dynasty (A.D. 1368). It is characterized by a refined and semi translucent finish.

HOW IT IS MADE

These dessert bowls are made by adapting the ancient decorative tradition of rice porcelain. Rice corns are pressed into the clay shards when still moist and then burned away in the kiln. The resulting gaps are then filled with enamel, creating a particularly sensual relief structure.

Architectural, silhouette-oriented cuts are a distinctive characteristic of ANNE GORKE's designs.

45 KILO – RAY

Founded in Weimar, grown up in Berlin: Daniel Klapsing and Philipp Schöpfer a.k.a. 45 KILO combine industrialized production processes and materials with crafts in a very reduced and simple visual language.

For the design of RAY Philipp and Daniel have focused on the decor of a classically shaped glass. The hand-cut profile of the drinking glass thereby defines it’s visual and haptic aesthetics. Hand and mouth will feel it’s thin cuts whilst light is refracted by it’s surface.

»As I started researching about the Bauhaus courses and workshops, the names of Kandinsky, Klee, Itten, Albers and many others came up. One thing was more interesting than the other, but particularly what at first called my attention was the investigation and analysis of Kandinsky about form and color.

This interesting deep analysis of the three simplest forms is what gave me the fundaments of making an interactive reinterpretation of Kandinsky's yellow triangle, red square and blue circle. I wanted to somehow engage the audience in the EXPO with my installation in an interactive and instinctive way. 

So I came to the idea of making three robotic sculptures in form of the three »Bauhaus forms« that are able to recognize colors through a programmable camera sensor. Every time a visitor that wears blue, yellow or/and red passes by the sight range of these three sculptures, the respective sculpture follows the person with its sight being able to move its head 180°. 

The visitor can stay playing with the sculpture as long as he/she wants. This installation is supposed to reach and engage a wide target group from different cultural backgrounds, ages and gender through simple, understandable and playful interaction.« Jorgelina Garcia

GREEN APPETIZERS — HERBARIUSUM prints by Peter Heckwolf

German Pavilion EXPO 2015 31 August – 6 September 2015

The Herbariusum draws on an idea employed in 1733 by the Erfurt pharmacist Kniphof where he directly printed plants. Here fresh plants are directly applied to rubber rollers, which in turn are transferred to paper making the fine plant structures more visible.

The »Space for Visual Research« design lab will contribute new video work as well as some prints.
