I was going to post something about how I wondered how much of the themes of control, the different levels of it and the different ways a person with power can manipulate someone etc were discussed in the session zero for the second campaign with the Mighty Nein and how much of it grew organically when they started to notice a trend in the characters backstories and character arcs. How much of it was intentional from the start, or is the way they leaned into it in the animated adaptation (especially with their introduction of Yasha) informed by hindsight?
Anyways then I got to Calianna in the campaign and she hit me with a two by four and then pointed at Caleb and said âI am going to be a narrative foil for you in this episode and look cute doing itâ.
Given Calebâs backstory had come out at this point surely the parallels were intentional at this point. Surely. Anyways I adore Calianna and am also looking forward to seeing how/if future guest players decide to play into those themes.

Threeâs a crowd!
I love they're not holding back on how Caleb's experiences as part of a trauma-bonded murder trio damaged his ability to form healthy relationships. Pushing Nott to do the trapped hallway alone, and then taking it as a sign of distrust when Beau saves her. Pulling out the fireball when Fjord and Nott get a bit testy. Thinking he has to threaten Beau into confessing only for her to just need the barest justification to clear things up. Immediately glomming onto Beau after she saves his life. This guy does not know how to deal with people other than "family who i must kill for and die for" and "enemies who are waiting to shove a knife in my back".

Early Campaign Caleb is someone who seems to want to keel over and crawl into a ditch at too much social interaction but could also absolutely read hardcore smut on the subway with a straight face, and I think thatâs beautiful.
Probably Only I Will Find This Funny
Itâs actually really interesting to go from the animated series first- which almost immediately starts humanizing the Kryn Dynasty and its people, not as an unflawed society but one with citizens as noble and selfish and complex as that of the empire- and then going back to the campaign, where Matt is absolutely using the limited POV to set up the idea of the dark counterpart/evil kingdom in order to subvert it later.
Weâre seeing the campaign dynasty through the lens of Empire propaganda and banned books and rumours of darkened skies equated to evil magic. Through Yashaâs stories sheâs heard third hand of how the dynasty treats her people. Through one encounter with a mysterious assailant who attacks Zadash to take back mysterious magical objects which may play a part in spooky ritual magic. Neither the Nein nor the audience know how much of the information weâve gleaned about the dynasty has any merit, but all of the propaganda and opinions from marginally trustworthy NPCs like Darion deliberately calls to mind the fantasy tropes of the evil kingdom filled with monsters and dark magic.
If anything, the animated series sets up the Empire as The Baddies right away, at least in its ruling class, and we know almost immediately the stakes that the stolen beacon has for the Kryn Dynasty and the lives of its people.
Which makes the changes in the confrontation in the sewers so interesting to me. That itâs the Nein from the campaign, with NO IDEA whatâs happening, saying shit, if this guy is just getting back something that belongs to his people, let him fucking have it. That itâs only after Thuron is killed and the Beacon risks going back to the empire that they steal it. Animated series Mighty Nein may not have the information to know the stakes of the beacon but they do know it was stolen, that itâs risking a war, and WE know that the Dynasty as a whole are just trying to get back something wrongfully taken from them. It could be that the Mighty Nein of the animated series have a better idea of the damage the beacon can do as a weapon and think it doesnât belong in anyoneâs hands. It could be that theyâre shady as fuck and havenât had their full character arcs yet so theyâre just trying to complete the job the gentleman gave them. It could be that the writers just needed an action scene there to get Yasha in and the negotiation etc with the Kryn wouldnât have worked. Whatever the reason, the choice is interesting to me.
We have left Zadash and still have no idea what was up with Horatio. The party collectively was like âwe have no need to further investigate why there is a skeleton stashed in the wine cellar.â I respect it but also I hope that Matt eventually explained what was up with that out-of-game if they donât get back to it in game or the curiosity will drive me up the wall.
