Bad idea: Age gap discourse but in a fantasy land where there's multiple races who have vastly different lifespans and life styles.
Is it wrong for a 27 year old human to date a 140 year old stone elf, considering most stone elves don't get out of diapers till their 30s?
Is it wrong for a 80 year old dwarf to date a two year old fire wisp, when fire wisps only live up to 5 years (between the eruptions) and have memories of their past lives, so in a way they're "born" at age 400,000+? That octogenarian dwarf is way younger than the fire wisp that's only physically younger than some of the socks the dwarf has!
Is it wrong for a chronomancer who was never born to date, well, anyone? They are zero years old and infinity years old and negative one hundred and seventeen years old all at once. They look like an old human, sure, with the long white beard and the wrinkly skin, but as far as anyone can tell, they've always looked like that. We've seen the cave paintings.
Is it wrong for a 30 year old lizardman (that's old in lizardman years) to date a human who is 60 years old in biological years (because of aging spells), 26 years old in lived-experience years, but only 13 years old in calendar years? (ie, they were born 13 years ago, but spent some of that time in sideways timelines, so they've lived more years than have passed in their home timeline?)
Is it wrong for a 12,000 year old dragon date a pile of 400 kobolds when kobolds only live like 10 years on average, but reach full maturity in one year? And if you disagree, can you do anything about it? You do know what happened to the last policeman who tried to arrest a dragon, right? Their city is still smoldering, 50 years later.
Is it wrong for anyone to date the time worm? It's the same age, every year. So the age gap can only intensify. If you start dating the time worm when you're both the same age, when do you break it off because you've become too much older than them?
And most confusing of all... What about the fairies? They could be anything between a thousand and a day old, they would lie about their age either way, and they can look like whatever they want. There's fairies we know for a fact have been around since the founding of The City of Towers, who met the silent mother herself, and also look like they're at most ten years old. Is it wrong to date them, or just really uncomfortable for everyone who sees it? And on the other side there's fairies who are "born" (hatched? They come from plants, I'm not sure what the verb even would be. Seeded? Sprouted, maybe) this week who are already appearing like middle-aged men and dancing with widows in what looks like a scheme to run off with her fortune but they never take the money, because what would a fairy want with worthless metal discs? Maybe fairies have a hive mind or genetic memory or reincarnation with full memories, they'd never tell you or give you a straight (or consistent) answer anyway.
Stonefolk are really the only inter-race dating situation anyone can agree on. They're unthinking & unmoving solid rock during the day, so those hours don't count. Thus their "real age" is a nice even half of their true age. So if you meet a stonefolk who was dug out 30 years ago, watch out: that's a 15 year old, and if you're a 25 year human, that's too young for you, even though their dig-date is five years before your birth-date.
EDIT: 2024/01/12: Changed the name of the Stonefolk
Like for real we need to do a sanity check here.
There is nothing any publicly viewable website can do to make it so publicly viewable content you put there, won't be seen by "ai". Just like it's impossible to do that for any other form of software.
On top of that all the AI companies already go ahead and grab shit all day. You can never trust them to not do this without the ability to personally inspect their systems. You will never get that ability. We already have known for years that this site in particular was used as a training data source just like any other multimillion user publicly viewable social site was.
This is like how spam never goes away. Anything simple enough for the average person who just wants to look at a website to do, programs can do that. It's like how you can't build an outdoor trash can that all human passerby can use while ensuring that no bears in the area can get into it.
Remember how on the Old Internet there were people who disabled rightclicking or highlighting in their websites so you canât copy paste without their permission and it was like âok Iâm 10 and know how to get around thatâ
Happy New Year and happy Stolen Heir release day! What a perfect day to drop this new artwork featuring Jude and Cardan!
LitJoy Crate announced a new bookshelf alley design as part of their recent Holly Black The Cruel Prince collection.
This is directly inspired by the deleted scene Holly sent out via her newsletter after the release of The Queen of Nothing. Itâs an extended QoN epilogue, time-wise, and one that Iâve received many, many requests to make fanart for! Iâm so happy we were able to use it for this piece. Lots of little details from the scene, and the glowing fireflies work perfectly for this item!
The one thing I made an epic-long essay to include were the foxgloves (like, there was no resistance from LJ or Holly to this, I just was drunk on symbolic excitement and argued to a brick wall about why they should be included). Take a few minutes to look up the meaning behind foxgloves (previously known as fairyâs gloves). My favorite point being that they are both poisonous and used in heart therapy (SICKNESS AND THE CURE, HELLO.) They only appear a scant few times in TFOTA, but itâs a perfect motif for the series.
Go check out LitJoy Crateâs instagram post for all the details! Thank you so much to LitJoy Crate for the use of the product photos!
Diving into TSH audiobook tonight! More art to come, until then, happy reading!

if elves lived in modern america they would be rednecks im sorry but it's true. imagine you meet a tall guy who's always in a baseball cap and driving around in his truck and learn that he's a crack shot with a rifle, like insanely good. okay that's pretty cool i guess. but it starts to get weird cuz he's so good at identifying edible plants that he practically survives off of berries and wild game and his mom's homemade bread which is the absolute best stuff you've ever tasted in your life. his truck, which he tells you he essentially built himself with the amount of repair and replacement work he put into it, is either insanely well-built or insanely lucky, and drives right on through snowdrifts and mud pits and potholes like they're nothing. the first time he tries to take you on a hike he drags you uphill for two straight hours with a cheery smile on his face and seems genuinely surprised when you're worn out at the top. sometimes when you're out in the woods his head turns around at what you swear is literally nothing and he's like "oh yeah there's deer 'round here you can hear 'em. loud as all get-out." when he finally takes off his fluorescent orange snapback and shows you his pointy ears and tells you he's immortal you're just like oh that makes a lot of sense actually
never let anyone tell u how many commas can go in a sentence, u measure that shit with ur heart

imagine a giant monster following you around and picking you up and kissing you all the time. thatâs what my cat lives with every day
thatâs exactly what half the people on this site want
oh to be gently picked up and kissed by a giant monster
[ID: a tweet by claiređĽđĽđĽ (@/anddreadful) reading âthe secret sauce of cool male love interests in fiction is to make them openly pathetic and undignified once per every 2-3 badass moments they get. this is called the howl ratioâ /end ID]
I suggest that we start using the term âcreativesâ instead of âcontent creatorsâ for authors/artists/gifmakers/podficcers for a few reasons, and chief among them are these;
we canât always be our most productive, but thereâs a terrible trend of fandom folks feeling bad if they donât have something new to post every few weeks
youâre still a creative person even if you arenât creating something at a given time, for whatever reason
and something itâs taken me far too long to learn myself: making things is not the rent you pay to be part of a community
born in the right generation (just old enough to completely ignore tiktok)
yesterday for April Foolâs my workplace had a short training article on recognizing computer-generated faces from real ones and one of the tricks mentioned was âcount the teethâ and I just wanted to say that itâs both ironic and kind of horrifying how society has unwittingly cycled right back to IF YE MEET A MAN ON THE ROAD, COUNT HIS FINGERS LEST YE DEAL UNKNOWING WITH A FAEÂ
Whereâs that image with the self driving car that is trapped in a salt circle made of âdo not crossâ symbols that its software wonât let it disobey
This one?

A tree trunk throne in Kendall, England.
Doesnât look safe for a mortal.
It wasnât made for a mortal.
@help-i-am-actually-solas
I love that you see something clearly not intended for mortals and think of me.
Many a man of arms misreads patience and quiet. She did much good among us at much cost. Her heart was not faint, and patience will break at the last.
They dared not touch her, though, for they feared her; proud and fair as a queen, before sorrow marred her. Witchwife they called her, and shunned her. Witchwife: it is but âelf-friendâ in the new language.
In truth little fear was seen in her face or her bearing. Tall and strong she seemed; for of great stature were those of Hadorâs house, and thus clad in Elvish raiment she matched well with the guards.
Aerin, Morwen, Nienor
Oh my gosh I am just in awe of this!
The Wintery colors are gorgeous and obviously that quote about Morwen is one of if not my very favorites so I am legally obligated to reblog anything with it (which reminds me I need to update my post about linguistics in that quote)
The architecture details in Aerinâs are so pretty. That one almost made me cry. And as always your clothing is so so beautiful
And amazing Glaurung design!!
