Ā Hazel jerked upwards in bed, her head snapping towards her phone, which had made a subtle noise.Ā Her breathing became sharp, her eyes frantically scanned the roomāevery sense had very dramatically leapt into high alert.Ā She felt a light hand on her back, causing her to turn, still breathing heavily.Ā Luckily, her husband had already sat up, rubbing one of his eyes.Ā Ā āNightmare?āĀ She stared at him for a few moments, beginning to relax as everything fell back into place.Ā
āMm⦠Are you okay?āĀ He kept one arm on her lower back for comfort, the other one reaching out and grabbing some water.Ā He took a big sip to wake himself up a bit more, and then let Hazel have it.
āIāYeah, I think so.Ā At least it wasnāt a panic attack this time, yāknow?ā He sleepily chuckled, putting a head on her shoulder.
āI thought so when you didnāt punch me for sitting up.āĀ Yeahhh⦠It was an issue that they came across a little too often.Ā She wouldnāt hit him too hard, but she had always been trained to hit someone from the behind.Ā If she was in high-alert, she tended to attack without thinking.Ā Even the thought of hurting Hendrik, even accidentally, didnāt sit well with her, even though the joke, so she chose to stay quiet.Ā Ā āIāmāIām like⦠Kidding, you know.ā
āI know⦠I know.āĀ She leaned her head against his gently, smiling a bit.Ā Ā āItās justāthe nightmare⦠Was about you, soā¦ā She sniffled, kissing his head lightly.Ā Ā āItās okay now, though.ā
āGoodā¦āĀ He yawned, flopping back.Ā He tried to take her with him by curling his fingers around her side, but she didnāt budge.Ā Hendrik scooched across the bed, wrapping his arms around her waist and looking up at her.Ā āSnuggle?ā
āGimme a minute, gimme a minuteā¦ā Hazel brushed back his hair, using her other hand to grab her phone.Ā Ā āI gotta message.āĀ
āWait whatās the⦠Whatās the message?ā He didnāt sit up, but put his head on her lap as she read her notifications.Ā She squinted her eyes lightly, but they just watered up.Ā She wasnāt used to reading this late.Ā She held it out for him, and he sat up abruptly, staring it down.Ā Ā āOh my God.ā
āSomeoneās trying to get ināFrom the East Wing.Ā Hazelāā
āThe kids.āĀ Hendrik practically flew out of bed, and Hazel wasnāt far behind him.Ā Her heart slammed against her chest, being the only thing she could hear as she rapidly put on her prosthetic leg.Ā She hesitated, though, joining her husband in bolting.Ā Her head turned towards the bedside table.
She hadnāt shot a gun since she had shot her mother to save her people.Ā Her hands shook, she went into spirals and was forced into flashbacks.
āHazel, we have to go!āĀ It had been twenty-four years.Ā She would be fine.Ā She tore open the side drawer, grabbing the gun and stumbling over to Hendrik.Ā Her heart pounded as the familiar shape was held in her hand, but she simply shoved it into his.
āEmergency only.āĀ She hissed, grabbing his other hand and taking off.Ā The run seemed too long, but as did everything when there was an intruder.Ā But eventually, they had heard a voice coming from their sonās room.Ā Hazel paused, holding an arm in front of Hendrik, mumbling,Ā āCould just be a date sneaking in.ā
āNot worth freaking them outāāĀ They both went quiet as the voices became a bit louder.
āSantiago, youāre so fuckingĀ cute.Ā You know that, right?ā
āDonāt.Ā Donāt come any closer, IāllāIāll call security.āĀ There was a loud laugh, followed by a frightened yelp.
āThey donāt come this late!Ā No oneās here, your highness, youāre screwed.Ā Unlessā¦Ā Well, you know what youād have to do.āĀ
āFor the last time, IĀ didnāt cheat on you, Maria!Ā I didnāt leave you for someone, I told you the truth, nothing but the truth, royalās honor.ā
āYou really expect me to believe that you left me becauseāBecause aw, oh, youāre such a mamaās boy?āĀ Hazelās blood chilled, and she shot a look at Hendrik, whose grip on her hand had tightened in fear.Ā She didnāt like Maria.Ā There werenāt a lot of people she didnāt approve of, but as soon as she walked in through the door, it was a hard no.Ā She had even kicked her out of the castle halfway through dinner.Ā Ā āWell, youāre gonna see your auntĀ in a few minutes if you donāt make some hotshot moves.āĀ Hazel yanked the gun from Hendrikās hand, a sudden burst of rage pushing through her veins as she swung the door open.
She didnāt kill anymore.Ā She had gotten therapy, she had gone to morals classes, put a full stop on what her parents had raised her to do.
But no one hurt her kids.
Hazel Fluor-Rodriguez-Angelopolus wouldnāt mind one last hit.
