Or the statement that “rape is about power, not sex”, coined to debunk the idea that perpetrators are simply overcome with desire, and pushing back against the claims that one can be too unattractive to be victimized. It is a slogan, for a specific purpose and situation, not a data-backed position that desire is somehow unique among human behaviour for never being able to be influenced by oppressive beliefs or involve abuses of power, that’s heading straight into the “he can’t be a misogynist! he has a wife!”-level thinking. The unfortunate truth is that sexual violence, like all kinds of violence, happens for a lot of reasons, and sometimes wanting to do something to someone who isn’t or can’t consent is one of them.
