 James asked his beautiful but slightly underdressed wife.  They had been getting ready for a social event, and it would seem as though he was unhappy with the completed process.

“Gentlemen,” said the Pirate King, and James could not help but smile at the way her subjects clung to the word, feverishly awaiting their orders.  Elizabeth always could command a room’s attention; she was no less fearsome on a quarterdeck (a phenomenon which he had been rather familiar with himself).  Even here…even now…he could feel himself under the same old spell.  He knew not why whatever was left of him had been granted this moment of consciousness, but James Norrington thanked heaven with all his soul as Elizabeth’s eyes came to rest right on him, the awaited order falling from her lips:

“Hoist the colours.”

And as his beloved stood framed against the sea and sky, the proud commander complete at last, James knew why he had been allowed this vision.

“What shall we die for?”
