WHAT. A. BRAT.
I love how they both get up and look down at her the same way. Cat version of hands on their hips and frowning.

Why don’t ppl crate their cats if they keep getting into things 🤔
There’s lotsa pressure for ppl to crate dogs. He spills his water bowl when I’m not home :( the internet is immediately U ShOuLd HaVe CrAtEd HiM!!!
100% crate ur dog, fully support, but why is it just like oh my cat eats plastic and shits in my bed and harasses the bird when I’m not home 🥰 and everyone is just “oh just cat things ¯\_(ツ)_/¯"
Nah bro. Crate that bitch.
Cats aren’t destructive purposefully or out of spite, but rather due to health problems, anxiety, or boredom, so crating them for bad behaviour is only a bandaid solution for the problem. Obviously you shouldn’t be letting your cat eat garbage or use your house as a litterbox, but crating it for hours is just going to make things worse in the long run. It doesn’t address the source of the problem, cats don’t respond to punishment the same way as dogs do, nor do they naturally find kennels comforting in the way dogs do.
Take my cat Kepler for example- he used to pee everywhere. If I’d just crated him when I was gone, he would still pee everywhere when I was home and let him free again. He wasn’t doing it to spite me- he was doing it due to anxiety and a health problem. He couldn’t have stopped it purposefully if he had tried. Instead I got him special litter, restricted his access to rooms he would pee in when I was away, and took him to the vet. Now I can leave him home with free reign in the house no problem. Same with my cat that was chewing cords. I removed his access to cords and addressed the root problem (boredom) by increasing his playtime. Crating would have only made him more bored and destructive.
You address the root of the problem, rather than locking the cat away. Most “bad behaviours” cats do (like the examples you provided) are typically caused by anxiety and health problems, and ignoring them can be potentially harmful to your cat.
It’s also my understanding that dogs do well in crates because they have the instinct to make a “den”- It is comforting to them to have a home base. Cats don’t naturally make dens and as a small animal they can feel trapped and become anxious if they do not have the ability to escape potential predators (this is also why they don’t do well with covered litter boxes).
In another post you used vet clinics as an example of people crating cats, but many clinics, shelters, and cat boarding places do allow their cats to have temporary free reign of a cat room during the day to minimize their anxiety. Cats can develop anxiety easily, and that is expressed in “problem behaviours” such as obsessive chewing, inappropriate litterbox habits, aggression, and meowing. By crating you’re likely only going to exacerbate the problem instead of solving it. It has been proven that keeping cats in cages in shelters for extended periods of time contributes to anxiety and behaviour problems.
An alternative to crating could be making a “cat proof” room that your cat goes into during the day- this allows your cat to feel safe, burn off energy, and practice natural behaviours without becoming anxious. Lucky for us, cats can’t chew through drywall like a husky can.
Regardless, if your cat is doing any destructive or nuisance behaviour for a long period of time, it’s probably time for a vet visit though, or a call to a cat behaviourist. The cat probably doesn’t want to be pooping on the bed or eating plastic just as much as you don’t want it to.
You’ve got some bad information about kenneling. Crating dogs isn’t not punishment and it’s not like they do things out of spite. Kenneling animals or giving them their own space helps them with anxiety stress. 🙄 dogs don’t respond to punishment either. Containing cats is not ignoring the problem it’s ensuring the safety of your pet and your home while you deal with it. And sorry to say a cat room IS containing your cat and cats love dark warm spaces they can hide is: a kennel, crate, xpen etc. Training isn’t going to happen over night. And you won’t see improvement over night when it comes to medical issues either. The solution isn’t just to hope nothing bad happens 🤷🏻♀️ your cat isn’t going to be in a kennel for 24 hours a day for months.
There is a lot of weird and downright wrong info in Dave’s reblog, the least of which is the assertion that dogs are destructive purposefully or out of spite.
They are not.
In fact no animal domesticated OR wild has been documented to even know what “spite” IS.
Additionally I’m currently cat sitting for the worlds worst cat simply because the owner won’t fuckin bother doing anything to train or contain it so like yeah how about we start kenneling cats.
I did not mean to imply dogs did things out of spite- I definitely don’t believe any animal does anything out of spite, as they don’t have the capacity to be spiteful. Dogs are usually destructive due to boredom or anxiety. I just meant to clarify that cats cannot be spiteful either.
the-adventures-of-dave: Makes a reblog purely about cats, only mentions dogs exactly ONCE to include the fact that they like dens and thus often do okay with crating for short periods of time. Mentions spite because many people assume cats do things like inappropriate defecation and urination out of spite/anger.
people immediately choosing the most uncharitable interpretation ever or lacking reading comprehension: DOGS AREN’T SPITEFUL EITHER.
With that out of the way, while cats like tight, sheltered places to hide in they also want to have a way to escape if needed. Also, cats need room for things like litterboxes if you’re keeping them confined. Most crates are not big enough unless you get the extra large dog crates and most people with cats aren’t going to want that just sitting around.
Instead, IF you must confine your cat, a cat-proofed bathroom is better. Food, water, toys, litterbox and only for a few hours a day, or overnight. That’s what I’m going to have to do with Bobble because he takes so long to eat, and Sundew would consume all his food and then vomit. Bobble will be in the cat-proofed upstairs with Sundew during the day, and at dinner time will go into the bathroom so he can eat all night.
So, to cover OP’s 3 scenarios-
1- Stop leaving plastic around. My Rowan would eat plastic. The answer is to be aware of that and throw plastic away where the cat can’t get it. No need to crate.
2- Take your cat to the vet, this is abnormal. Rule out medical causes first, then go to behavioural. This is often an issue of stress and in this case crating will only make it worse. Your cat may not like the location of the litterbox. You might not be cleaning it often enough. Cat may not like the type of litter. If you have other pets, they may be resource guarding the box or pestering the cat while it’s using it. If you have multiple cats you may not have enough litterboxes. (number of cats +1)
3- ffs don’t leave the bird somewhere the cat has access to! Isolate the bird! Have a room the bird is in that the cat can’t be in. If you have a studio apartment then you either shouldn’t have gotten a bird or shouldn’t have gotten a cat.
Regarding vet clinics, cats are often quite stressed while boarding, but also do get social interaction time with the kennel staff. In spaces purely dedicated to boarding, they’ll have larger spaces (often small rooms) and/or access to a large play room.
folks, please do not crate your cats 😳

Is it still bad for the local ecosystem to let your cat outside if their breed is native/naturalized to the area?
Yep.
There really aren’t many areas where there are native wildcats.
And those aren’t the same as your domesticated housecats anyway so...
Domestic Cats aren’t naturalized anywhere, and their interbreeding with actual native species (ex. Scottish Wildcats) is a huge problem for their already vulnerable populations. You’re domestic cat is domestic. The only place it’s naturalized to is your house.

why do so many people refuse to believe that cats love so pure and deeply and they're not always just self serving little heat creatures. when a cat loves you, when a cat looks at you with love in their eyes... my god
