common waycest sceneario i mull over is any sceneario in which mikey is forced to confront or admit to gerardâs treatment of him by any sort of authority, like that of law enforcement or a therapist. letâs say we have some irrefutable evidence that Something was done to mikey and that gerard was the aggressor, but the evidence is shaky at best and dependent on mikeyâs testimony.
i love thinking about the psychological distress and disfigurement heâd put himself through, adamantly choosing to deny deny deny whatâs happened to him because snitching on gerard was always completely out of the question. not just out of obvious retaliation and anger on gerardâs end, but as a proclamation of his own âinnocenceâ because heâd assume himself guilty as well, whether that be as a victim or accessory. itâd be like pulling teeth to get mikey to say anything to start with, much less admit to it, but with his fragility i donât think heâd last very along against field-tested investigation tactics... and once he is talking, itâs just metal-mouthed clamp downs, because it wasnât gerard and he didnât do it and if he did do it he didnât mean to, he didnât mean it like that, and if he did itâs my fault anyway, i provoked him, and itâs nobodyâs business, iâm not pressing charges, just leave me alone! the scrapes and the bruises are from something else, i do things to myself all the time. i donât even think heâd acknowledge any evidence of sexual battery, heâd be adamant heâs not gay and theyâre not like that, legality be damned. expect emphasis on consent, or at least emphasis on not Not giving consent. could be fun to set up a persuasive, shepherding character attuned to mikeyâs psychological profile who can guide him into easy, non-accusatory answers
i imagine heâs always had a script ready to go in his head, half at gerardâs insistence, and half because if caught, he knew heâd have to be the one defending gerard, not the other way around. and when heâs finally released from the investigation room, over-wrought and sea legged, heâd still wait loyally at the station for Big Brother to be released too, name cleared, charges dropped. he doesnât know if itâs because heâd go sick with grief alone at home without gerard to comfort him, or if itâs because heâs scared the authorities know enough to keep him for good.
when mikey sees him, what kind of reward for his loyalty will he be looking for? praise? indifference?forgiveness? affection? when pressed for details on what he said, or didnât say, will gerard be satisfied with his answers?
gets more compelling when you consider all of the parties who could get involved here, letâs say the band is aware of the arresting event and are compelled to pick sides. while yes theyâd implicitly want to trust, side with, and believe in gerard, i donât think mikeyâs plea of non-victim would hold up too convincingly when connected with the dots theyâd glean from knowing the two interpersonally. so as a friend, as family even, do we put aside the obvious and believe mikey, just to appease him, pretend itâs not happening because no, gerardâs a good guy, and he wouldnât Hurt Baby Brother! or do we run the risk of scorning mikey in saying this guyâs a freak and he hurt you? is it a mix of the two? are they allowed by the brothers or by gerard to discuss it, as a group or interpersonally? or what if we never get that far, and the state decides to pursue, invigorating an ongoing legal battle in which the ways are separated and legally forbidden from contact by the state until a ruling is reached? what if this comes about when theyâre younger, and statutory convictions are involved, cps creeping at the door? thereâs so many possibilities with so many possible endings, and itâs all so much fun for me
