while the design of joan is not at all a bad one, i wanted to try my hand at a look that reflected what i’ve always wanted in her design. my thoughts:
joan of arc is historically known for dressing in men’s clothing, specifically armor. her design in the show is alternative-influenced for sure, but not really… masculine? or at the least gender neutral. i wanted to go for something that didn’t compromise her silhouette but got more at her desire to dress for utility and comfort, as well as was in line with fashion in the early aughts. i also gave her shorter hair to make her appear a bit more masc.
to keep the goth influence, i gave her some piercings. in particular a cross, because it fits with the aesthetic and also nods to her clone mother’s religious motivations and significance.
i wanted something on her shirt that also hinted at who she was. keeping in mind 1) restrictions of animation and the graphical style of the show and 2) how the writing intentionally made the historical jokes incredibly obvious to reach a wider audience, i just straight up put an arc on it.
everything below her shirt is the same because it’s perfect. her pants and shoes don’t need any modification or additions.
i wanted to give joan a look that separated her a bit more from cleo as well, with cleo as the nearly hyperfeminine type of woman abe is more attracted to and joan is shown to despise as a result. abe doesn’t consider joan a romantic prospect because they’re friends, sure, but it’s also shown it’s in part because he doesn’t consider her attractive enough in her preferred presentation. in addition to that, it makes jfk’s words to her at the end all the more impactful, in my mind.
idk what the boss calico is but this person is pretty
