one trope of the avvar is that they ~ stinky ~ and bjorn takes this VERY PERSONALLY because he works very hard on his personal hygiene. it kinda stemmed from having to care for his wounds when he was mauled by the bear for a very long time, and balled up into something of a paranoia.
the mothers would make him ointments with certain oils to help his mood while he recovered, as he explained to them he was feeling very sad at this perceived weakness. the mothers assured him he had been very brave, and we all must rest to heal sometimes, but nothing worked. so they added patchouli to the lather they washed his hair with. lavender to his pillow. bjorn reacted very well to it, and by the time he had healed he had a strong fondness for perfumes and oils. so he learned to make them.
being a berserker means a life covered in muck and gore. but he often tries to at least sponge it off as soon as possible, becoming frustrated and uncomfortable if he can’t for a very long time. he also has a collection of rickety little soaps and oil mixes he’s made, that he uses and wears. oftentimes you’ll catch a whiff of patchouli and fern, and then bjorn will lumber by. it leaves people very confused, to pair it with his appearance, to say the least.
