he did as she instructed, taking a glass and the smallest step towards her. “just pretending to talk? not actual talking?” he questioned, a soft frown on his face. “are you sure they’ll just leave me alone?”

“No, I don’t really want to talk.” She sighed. “Yeah. If they think you and I are friendly, you become the least interesting person in the captiol, guaranteed.”

“people are staring at me…” vision muttered, almost hiding behind his glasses at this point, head down, his voice no louder than a whisper. he didn’t like that there were so many people here, and that they all knew him. every time someone approached him, it was either to talk about the kids he’d murdered, that his fake hand looked good, or that he looked good and if he wanted to go someplace quiet. it only made him nervous. “oh god, why are they staring?”

“Because you’re drawing attention to yourself.” She mumbled. “Just take a glass off a tray and pretend to talk to me. Then they’ll leave you alone.”

“You’ll live.” unlike them.

“Yes, I guess I will.”

“That’s…I get that. Do you work in a morgue somewhere else during the off-season?”

“People are always dying. I’m always working.”

Avis looked at the screen in disgust. “Yes, I wasn’t allowed to touch the bodies and kept from doing my job. No, I am not happy about it.” She said sourly. 

“Boohoo. What an inconvenience it must’ve been to you.”

“I get that. It’s your job, you don’t like other people interfering.” She folded her hands together behind her back, rocking back slightly on her heels. “It must be a bit of a relief, though, to have a bit more time between having to process the bodies? I can’t even imagine how you can…can hold it together, I guess, after the bloodbath.”

“I work better when overwhelmed. The work focuses me. Keeps me grounded. Without it, I feel out of place is all.”

“If you can’t touch ‘em, what can you do? I thought morticians were just for cutting open the bodies and stuff.”

“Nothing. I can’t do anything.”

“I’m sure one of the other Gamemakers has already offered their apologies, but we made sure that the greatest care was taken with the, um, bodies. I-I didn’t have a direct hand with them, I can’t really bare to get too close to them, but the boats were designed to have top-notch safety mechanisms so the re-animated bodies wouldn’t be harmed.”

“Yes, I was told but...it’s still annoying.”

“Got it. But what got you kicked out? Those nasty Gazette rumors?” He smirked, hoping she would find some humor in it.

“I believe I just told you.”

“Aw the little creep wasn’t alowed to interfere with the bodies, shame.”

“How would you like it if someone kept you from mentoring those brats every year? Huh? Or if someone kept you from your husband? I am married to my job, Ms. Blackwood. I do not like to away for too long.” 

“Currently, not me. Talk to the peacekeeper in front, I don’t care.” 

As usual, Marina spent the whole ball talking to sponsors and fretting over her tributes.  This year was even worse than usual.  Her tributes were so young and it was so heartbreaking.  She didn’t know what to do to help them.  She felt helpless.  They’d have to come up with something if Theo and Aedre were going to stand a chance.  Sipping her champagne, she sank into a chair at one of the tables and sighed.  “I wish the sponsors would quit asking when my wedding is and focus on the tributes.”

“I wish people would stop dying so I could relax for a bit. But we all can’t get what we want now can we?”

“Because I feel like we might have some things in common and be very alike and you might understand my point of view, you know?”

“No.”

No, I don’t think I’ll be supporting any tributes this year. It’s just… one day I woke up and realized they aren’t worthy.
