Details about flight incident Iberia Airbus A-340-600 near Bogota on Jan 17th 2019, engine shut down in flight
On one hand this is a prime example of how an engine failure isn’t much of a problem at all; A 4-engined aircraft like the a340 with a single engine failed can fly without much of a change. The decision to divert to Bogota was a decision by the pilot made as a sensible precaution, but not one forced by the plane’s inability to fly. A malfunction of control surfaces - in contrast - would have been a much more serious situation.
On the other hand, the handling of the situation by the airline - not giving information to passengers or trying to rebook them before sending them to hotels - was less than ideal,.
